I've read on health websites that it is unsafe to perform DATY on a woman while she is having her period.

She will probably tell you, but if she doesn't for some reason, you should be able to tell, but in case you can't (for whatever reason), then rely on your sense of smell the most. Also, although I have never heard that theory before, and have no motivation whatsoever to test it, you should confirm it with the Love Goddess at the Erotic Highway board. There is no polite way to ask, except to be polite. "Excuse me, do you happen to be........" I would really suggest you ask before you have stuck your face down there so that she doesn't assume you are commenting on hygiene issues. Prepare to duck and cover if you are misunderstood.
Reminds me of a truly tasteless cartoon in Hustler from way back in which Dracula is sitting on a couch watching TV and dipping his chips in a menstruating woman. Very sick and tasteless, but I could not stop laughing.

I don't know who you've been seeing but most providers simply don't work when they are having their period. If you ever encounter this situation you will know without having to ask...Of course, there is one way to be absolutely positive-just don't DATY....EVER!

from a providers point of view i don't even see clients during that time but i am sure other providers may it don't hurt to be open and ask .. its not a awkward question especially if she is understanding make sure she knows what you want and don't want specially if you have seen her before.
My ATF loves it but does not work when she has it. However, we see each other off the clock on those days and simply do other things such as have a cup of tea and talk, and simply sit on the couch and cuddle. The first time she told me it was that time of the month and she was uncomfortable doing anything physical during that time. We know each other well enough and see each other often enough that we can sense the bedroom scene is not where we want to go during the time we spend together for that visit. In the old days we called it quality time and there was a good reason for it. Last time around, I helped her review her citizenship questions and this weekend she told me she passed the exam with flying colors. We really celebrated. She's getting citizenship in about 2 months and we've reserved that evening for a special celebration.
