I've never found it mattered at all who the boss was or if I knew the name/face or not. (It's a difference situation if you are a personal friend outside the business relationship I would agree.) A good organization and good boss is going to backup their employees/agent as long as they are doing the right thing. In a good organization if the one person is not doing the right thing then others way before you need to talk with the boss will get things fixed. But that's a generalization and I don't often hit the MPs

I've wondered how the typical AMP / KMP is set up.  Is there an owner who is behind the scene?  Is the mamasan the owner?  Does what appears to be the number 1 masseuse call the shots?  I've seen mamsans get yelled at by the masseuse, and other times the masseuse seems intimidated by the mamasan. Just curious.  It is always helpful when you realize you are or are not dealing with the boss.

I think this is one of those "how sausages and laws are made" kind of things.

You probably don't want to know

A blog about the KMP scene in NYC implied that ownership can be quite varied. Sometimes the working girls have a piece of the pie. Sometimes the phone girls have a piece. Sometimes mamasan. Sometimes, the actual owners are silent and remote. I seem to recall the occasional news story about an arrest that nets a middle-aged or older Korean women living in the suburbs as the owner. (There was a recent similar case in Boston, too. A driver hit someone in Chinatown and dragged the person, under her car, onto the highway!!! She was arrested later and the newspaper mentioned her prior record related to your Q.)

And the recent Seattle sting reveals what is also known in NY. The owner of the operation is not necessarily the owner or leaseholder of the property. But the leaseholder can still be charged and "I had no idea what they were doing there!" doesn't fly.

So how DO you say goulash in Korean?

It's not always what it seems, and I will leave it at that.

Very few American people will ever know exactly how these things works, nor should they. If they did, more than likely they would be blabbing everything they know all over the internet for LE to see and learn from.

Suffice it to say, Human trafficking almost never is happening in any of these places and quite frankly that's all any of us need to know.

Not sure that's (trafficking unlikely) is all we need to know. Some idea about how to pick up on the difference when trafficking is present would be good to know too.

Just because the session didn't go well and she didn't seem incline to create the impression of a personal touch but was very standoffish and distant doesn't mean trafficking. Could just be that your stink and are ugly and the girl just learned her dog just got hit by a car so we preoccupied with other thoughts. At the same time, a girl that seems eager to please may well be the one that is trafficked.

I largely agree that aside from this aspect how it all works is none of my business and one I really have no real interest in -- possible one of those "it just makes my life more complicated than needed" situations.

True. Not all is always as it seems. A place I went to years ago, where most of the staff was very friendly (and the mamasan was quite hot!) was a total shock when they got raided and were shown to be trafficking. I have generally thought a place where the staff spoke English better was not likely to have trafficked people, but perhaps that is also not a good indicator.
