specifically if the NBA attempts to "force" the sale of the Clippers. You've got these NBA bylaws conflicting with property rights, and since Sterling is a lawyer by trade, and a first class asshole, I expect this will be front page news for awhile. Now if we could only resurrect Johnny Cochran to defend Sterling. That would be classic (lol)

bottom line is that Donald Sterling is bad (really bad) for NBA business. You can't have a franchise (especially one in a major market as Los Angeles) that potentially would become a financial disaster. Sponsors have already disassociated themselves from the Clippers. I am sure fans would have ultimately boycotted games and players/coaches were all set never to play for the Clippers. As long as Sterling is associated with the Clippers the value of the franchise takes a tremendous hit....Weak franchises hurt all NBA teams. Silver's loyalty, like all commissioners, lie with the owners. Of course they want Sterling to sell the team...and fast. The faster he's out, the faster the owners restore the economic validity of the Clippers.
Now have other owners or players uttered racist, homophobic or anti-Semitic remarks in private? Of course. But they did so in private and haven't been caught. Not fair, but it is what it is. At face value, it's not right that he is being banned for what he thought were private comments. But once the public hears them, the outrage is too great. It becomes a witch hunt. Look what happened to Fuzzy Zoeller when he tried to be funny after Tiger won the Masters (calling him "boy" and referencing chicken wings and collard greens).. He lost every sponsor he had. It was a financial disaster to him. If he made these comments in private, he prob. still has endorsement deals today. In today's climate of social media, you just cant misspeak. Ever.

Out of everything I've read concerning the Donald Sterling comments--this is the best, most sound, reasoned statement about the situation that I've seen!! Whether you like it or not--in today's hyper-technology/social media/soundbite world you MUST watch WHAT you say and WHO you say it to EVERY SINGLE SECOND!! It's the way things are and it's not going to change--if anything technology and social media might become MORE intrusive in the future!! You gotta watch your ass all the time!!
Do I think that this situation, while certainly unpleasant, has been overblown? No doubt!! But I don't feel one bit sorry for Sterling--he shot his mouth off like a damn fool idiot and he's paying the price! This bimbo who taped his comments might have been looking for a way to take him down and saw a perfect opening to do so. She's not hanging around a crotchety 80 year old man for love--that's for sure!! And ShakingtheSheets is spot on about this situation being bad for business--they'll dump Sterling first chance they get in order to keep the Clips franchise from further economic fallout.

If Sterling were black and made similar comments about whites, it would not be as much of a big deal because blacks are a minority in this country and power dynamics/history would not come into play as it does with Sterling being white in this case. I feel this is more about the NBA owners and a majority black league of nba players not wanting to be seen as supporting/getting paid by someone who made such comments. Truth be told though given Sterling past history, I don't think he surprised anyone with those comments. To me the bigger story to me is that you had black players willing playing for him for decades, nba owners turning a blind eye to Sterling's beliefs, and a woman (who has a black parent) being with him up until his views was brought out to a wider public.
In the end I hope Sterling stands his ground and does not sale the team. As of matter of fact I hope Sterling start throwing stones at the glass houses of the nba players and owners. At the end of the day you don't have to like the guy or his comments, but who was he harming with those comments. Did he create his own private security force to keep blacks out of the staples center during clippers games, no. People are being killed because of their religion, skin color, gender, etc. and I suppose to, as a black male, to get all bent out of shape over this? Not going to happen, more so I find this whole mess entertaining because if Sterling does end up selling the team he going to make a butt load of money off the deal, given what he paid for the team in the first place.
You might want to check with the NAACP about that. They are at this very moment melting down his "Lifetime Achievement Award" trophy.
