Gambling is the reason football has become more popular than baseball. Because of the scoring system, fewer games and the teams running true to form, football lends itself to betting much better than baseball.
I'd say that betting on baseball is a crapshoot but craps actually is the game with the best odds of winning (unless you're a card counter).

...as a sure thing. You were just too damn positive about the outcome of the game. If you wanted to bet me that the sun would rise tomorrow, I'd take that bet if the odds were attractive enough.
Hell, in this past football season I lost betting on Uconn straight up vs. Michigan but the odds were too good to pass up. Didn't matter because I won ten times that bet by taking Uconn and the points.
I will agree that laying -160 on favorites is a sure way to the poor house. I have already had that conversation with CoC, but over the long run if you have a bit a discipline and a betting strategy, baseball is easier to win long term than football, but you have to look at it as a marathon, not a sprint. To win over the long term you have to have a long term strategy, or else the juice will eat you up.
The beauty about baseball is that there are thousands of baseball games each season, every team plays a regular season of 162 games. The best team is only going to win about 100 games and the worst is only going to lose 100. Loading up on "can't miss" games is how most casual bettors lose their ass betting baseball, while a patient and experienced gambler can get the odds to work for him and not against him, something very difficult to do with football, especially the NFL.
