Assuming he's healthy in 2014, Sanchez will be a quality #2

t's going to be hard to sell to a fan base Mark Sanchez as your starter. Teams (and as an extension their fans) always want what is new and un-tried. They would much rather hand the reigns to the unproven rookie draft pick than a guy who has now failed for multiple seasons. Sanchez may be given an opportunity to "compete" for a starting job, but chances are that the team has a rookie somewhere on the roster waiting to take Sanchez's spot once ready.

But the idea that a healthy Sanchez couldn't be a terrific back-up QB in the league is ludicrous. I would love to have him backing up Big Ben. All your asking your back-up to do is hold down the fort for 2-3 games if your starter is injured. Go 2-1; keep your team stabilized. Sanchez is a 4 year starter in this league; that kind of experience is invaluable. Guys like David Carr and Charlie Batch made a living on being career back-ups once they fizzled out as starters. Your not asking your back-up to play an entire season (if your starter goes down for any great length of time, chances of you having a competitive season are really slim).

Sanchez has played in 6 post season games. That's not a small sample. But its not going to happen in New York. (at least not with the Jets). I think in an environment where there is no question who the starter is (Pittsburgh, Green Bay, New Orleans for example), Sanchez can have a viable career as a back-up/spot starter when required.

Reports from ESPN indicate that Sanchez has a labral tear in his right shoulder and will need surgery at some point in time. Sanchez could opt for rehab in an effort to attempt to play this year, but would need to go under the knife after the season is over. Even though Sanchez is guaranteed over $8M, it's unlikely that he can win the job back from Geno Smith.

if he can rehab without surgury, he is only one Geno running play away from playing.

That toe sucker Rex Ryan should be fired, and NY fans got a gift in Sanchez being hurt. He is one of the 3 worst QBs in the league.

I assume you mean starters only, right? we aren't including every #3 qb in the nfl?

32. gabbert
31. weeden
30. locker
29. sanchez

for me he is 4th worst. but lets not forget, he has very little help. I say it about cam newton, and I will be unbiased here. santonio holmes is best suited as a slot wr. so is Jeremy kerley. no other wr on that team belongs in the nfl. the TE situation is iffy at best, and they have 3-4 rbs that nobody else wanted ( chris ivory 4th rb in NO, alex green cut by GB, mike goodson 3rd in both Carolina and Oakland, bilal powell, who is of course, bilal powell). the line isn't very good anymore and the d is worse without revis. he isn't very good anyway, but they have not helped him out much.

WHOA!!! Slow down there cowboy!  The Great Blaine Gabbert is not the #32 QB in the league!  Out of the 32 starters, he's probably 58th ;)

Agree with all you say, but the D does look pretty good, no?

You think they would play Sanchez over Matt Simms or Brady Quinn?

My .02...   good points.  I say he shoud go back up Carson Palmer in Arizona and when Palmer hangs it up see if he can step in... plus, Palmer always needs a capable back-up.  Two USC guys looking out for each other, and Sanchez can enjoy a low key western city in a stadium that won't be impossible to throw in a la Met Life
