I agree that it depends on your personality and also what you are looking for. For me, a first appointment of 1.5 or 2 hrs is my preference. It is more expensive, but it allows some time to chat at the beginning, maybe enjoy a glass of wine, and generally break the ice before getting into the action. If you are a bit shy around someone you have never met(like I am), a 1 hr appointment seems rushed, and makes me uncomfortable because there is no "get to know each other" time. But that's just me.
For repeat visits I do 2 hours, because I find it more personal and more comfortable. I can only afford to hobby monthly so I like to make the most of each session.

My first couple of hobby experiences were half hours. Now I do 1 hour appointments, but I still do a half if I just want to pop and run. Starting this way was good for me because it allowed me to learn how to pace myself. I don't think it's necessary to start this way, it's just how I did it.
If you want a GFE, you'll need at least an hour.
My advice: get a VIP, find a well-reviewed provider, tell her you're new to this, and she should be able to accommodate you and you'll both have a great time.
Save the multi hour, mega buck appointments to when you are fully comfortable with all the protocols and customs herein. Also IMO you should only consider multi hour appointments with providers that you have previously seen, are fully comfortable with, and enjoy a cursory simpatico with.
That's probably a question that is much dependent on individual desire and opinion- you'll have to assess yourself on what you are looking for.
I agree with above on starting with an hour- I did that my first two experiences- if I had done two hours, I'm not sure I'd have been ready. I've never done a half hour and would feel terribly rushed.
If you are looking mainly for getting laid quickly and at the lowest cost, an hour would probably do it every time.
I found however after the first two that I really wanted a great GFE from then on, and have since booked a 2 hour as first visit with each new provider I've tried and that has worked for me. Followup visits once I had met and was comfortable with the provider have so far been one hour.
For a first time, I would go for an hour, with a well revied provder that suits your fancy. 2 hrs. on repeat visits, if you have connected. If that happens, you be off on a Magicle Mystery Tour...enjoy the sessions. That happened to me...nearly four years ago. I have an ATF as a result...

Some good advice has been given by others. You need to take it and think about it in terms of what you want out of a session and the type of provider you visit. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
1. Is this a provider who reviewers indicate is personable? Do you enjoy talking with people you've never met? yes ---> longer session
2. Do you want multiple pops? Does it take a while for you to recover? yes ---> longer session
3. Do you enjoy touching, kissing, slow soft foreplay? yes ---> longer session
I've done a few half hour sessions. For me, it just ends up feeling like I had masturbated. Because of the time constraints, I find the sensuality doesn't build up to the level I would like. I find that 2 hour sessions tend to provide me what I am looking for. For others, a shorter (or longer) session may do it.
In summary: Think about what you want to get out of a session. That will be your guide to selecting a provider and a session length.
...Your's is the most intelligent question that's ever been posted. Actually not a stupid question under any circumstance. 1 hour is my recommendation. It's long enough to get a good sense of what the provider is like without being rushed, and it's not too long (i.e. too much $$$$$$) in case things don't click.

My main suggestion is to avoid 1/2 hour appointments for the first visit. A lot of providers won't even book 1/2 hour appointments for the first visit (myself included) because there's just no way to get comfortable with someone before diving into the action.
I'll also agree with others that an hour session to begin with is best. If you haven't met with the lady before, and you don't know if you two will click, 2 hours would be overkill. Save the longer sessions for after you know you like spending time with the lady.
you will probably be able to get MSOG in 1 hour. Us older guys (I'm mid 50's) need more time to get MSOG. Half-hour appointments are too slam bam thank you mam for me. I mostly do 90 minutes or 2 hr. appointments now. I have done one dinner-date with a lady I had seen previously and it was fantastic. Also, never done an overnight; someday maybe.
For new clients, I really like to have at least an hour, if not 1 1/2 or 2. I offer a new client session of 1 1/2 hours for this express purpose. This way we can relax, chat, have some wine and unwind a bit before the deed.
A recent client who had booked a 1 1/2 hr GFE session with me said that he appreciated the bit of extra time as it helped calm him and put him more at ease. It was definitely nice to know that I'm not the only one who gets a little nervous! After some wine and stimulating conversation, neither of us were shy any more!
While financial and/or time constraints may make a 1 1/2 or 2 hour appointment next to impossible, go for at least an hour on your first time. That 'click' between you and your provider can make all the difference between a great GFE or, as someone else posted, feeling like you just masturbated.
