Mostly, if you make sure you avoid rush hour M-F, you will be OK. Saturdays can be bad.

From time to time, there are events that affect traffic, like sporting events in huge venues. If you have any sport fan friends, ask them to let you know of any games that could affect traffic and find out what time that will be.

Wow, you avoided traffic jams in L.A. I have never heard of that, LOL.

Oh dear, I found myself caught in a 2hr traffic jam today just to cross the SF bridge to head back to Napa. I don't wish to get caught in a bad traffic jam again. Any advice on hours to avoid the bridge or an alternative route that's less busy? I managed to not get into any traffic jams in LA, yet my first day I'm SF, I fell into a whopper of one. I'll be making this trip anytime someone books me in the city. So hoping to figure out the easiest least stressful way to commute

Thanks for your advice and have a great week

But I mostly hung out in Griffith park where hardly anyone goes. Had the whole park to myself :) and my lodging was near the park. Being out here in Napa area is super beautiful and magical, but I didn't expect a traffic problem. I'll sort it tho. Just need to figure the alternative routes and the times to avoid. I can always drive in early for a date, and hang out in a cafe to work on my novel.

Sorry to hear you got stuck in traffic on the Bay Bridge, but you got caught in the "perfect storm".
The Warriors were playing in Oakland in the playoffs, then the Giants were playing in the city, all during normal rush hour traffic.
Normally it wouldn't be that bad, certainly never as bad as daily LA traffic, you could always go to Napa thru the Golden Gate Bridge. But please remember that on Memorial weekend, the San Mateo Bridge and the approach to the GG Bridge from SF will be closed so the Bay Bridge will really be packed.

It's a traffic app. of course owned by Google. That might help you. I use it often when I'm in CA.

..it absolutely saved the day going between the city to the suburbs, juggling family, friends and lovers.  I love how it's interactive and playful;  makes seeing the bad traffic less stressful!

It's pretty simple either stay in the City or the SFO Area or the South bay.  If you have to head to the Napa or the East Bay you should be on the road before 2pm .  Friday's  starting at 3 are usually the worst timeframe to head anywhere.

has real time traffic mapping and gps so you can estimate how long it will take you to get somewhere in current conditions.

The golden gate bridge, highway 17, the 580/680 intersections and a few others in the Bay Area are all typical LA-style traffic areas.  How does one possibly avoid traffic jams in LA?
