Can anyone recommend a good service provider for a hobby phone. Something where I can talk and text and not have a monthly payment but instead low cost prepaid minutes/texts.

Thanks Amber

No personal info needed (although most ladies prefer first name and last name on phone caller ID)
And has nice selection of cheap smartphones, such as

Best plase of purchase is Best Buy, just decline set-up in store and do it at a Starbucks or Panera

I used Tracfone for a while, and it served it's purpose. The only thing I didn't like about it was when you buy airtime you also buy a time frame. So say you buy 90 minutes, it comes with a 2-3 month activation. If you don't use that 90 minutes in that time, you still have the minutes, but have to buy more to activate the phone again. I stopped using it when I got to having over 1000 minutes, but always running out of time to use them.

That was my experience.

There's an app called 'burner' that allows you to get a separate phone number on your iPhone. If you are just looking for a second phone number this is the best - if you are worried about someone seeing your minutes it may not be the best option.

This app does seem to be a great compromise, but  sometimes an app will not perform as advertised on your smartphone just because Zeus, oh he of all things electronic, has decided that he is having a shitty day and you don't deserve to have fully functional technology at your disposal.
As a compromise between technology and privacy, I use Google Voice and G-chat to accept phone calls from people with gmail accounts.

Works for me. for those who want a different option, an easier option, with Very Little Set-up,
I suggest tracfone. They offer a 30minute & 30 service day card, and also a pop-up for service day extension after purchasing the $99 1 year 400 minute airtime card. An extra year, iirc.

I miss work. *sigh*
