I hate when I go to Victoria's Secret and many other stores that asked for my email address and my phone number and like a dummy I use to just give it to them and then they send us all kinds of promotional products. it makes me crazy how many they send out every day every store.
But I know that the stores sell their data the email addresses are up for sale the phone numbers get sent to places so I never give my email and phone number anymore to anybody behind a desk if they want me to pay for my product. pay for it and leave.
They also keep a senses on how many people in the area buy stuff from the store Sophia area code is the same as the store I mean it's all just big business crap sorry if it's an inconvenience I hope we all learn not to give out our email addresses and phone numbers to people in stores that's a big no-no if you don't know now you know!

I just went to a Best Buy to get a card to add time to my TracFone.  When purchasing it, the guy at the register asked for my phone number.  I had other items I was purchasing and I did not think anything of it.  After I gave my business number, my email address popped up on the digital screen where you sign.  I was a surprised but did not say anything as there were people in line behind me.

When I looked at the receipt, it said the activation code would be sent to my email address which, luckily, is my business and not home email.  I would not be surprised if I had given my home number, another email address may have popped up which would have caused all kind of problems.  Needless to say, I trashed the phone card and am considering trashing the phone as well.

I assume they are trying to track these phones since many people are registering them anonymously.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Has anyone else run into this or is it only done at Best Buy.

But then again I don't usually shop at best buy

Stay away from Best Buy.  I went to a CVS, grabbed a card, paid cash at the register, no muss, no fuss.

Don't know what is going on at Best Buy, but every time I go in there it seems I have a bad experience.  Either they are selling crappy products, the sales help is nasty, or they don't have in stock what is advertised.

Hope this helps.

There was a thread on the newbie board last month about this. It might be wise to stock up before the other retailers start to check id's. Or get a 1 year card. Just a thought.

I have been to CVS many times and pay cash.  There is nothing at all to trace.

Radio Shack used to ask for my phone number.  So did Sports Authority.  So I looked up both their numbers, put them on a card in my wallet and when Radio Shack asked for my number I gave them the number for Sports Authority and when Sports Authority asked for my number I gave them the number for Radio Shack.

More troubling is that the last time I activated a tracfone it required that I call a number from another phone to registre the tracfone.   I was able to do that without using my home phone or any easily traced back to me, but is that typical?
