which is like home base for several tourist tour buses, the double-decker open top ones, the Big Bus, Old Town Trolley, etc.  These are a bit pricey (like $ 40-45/day) but circulate around the tourist areas (Mall, Museums, Monuments/Memorials, etc.) & allow unlimited hop-on, hop-off opportunities & have a narrator as you go.  By far the most efficient & least tiring way to see the most in a single day the mall is 2 miles long & many attractions are off the Mall & would require more walking.  Beforehand, look at si.edu (Smithsonian web site), nga.gov (National Gallery of Art) and visitthecapitol.com (US Capitol Bldg.) & try to decide what you specifically want to see.  Also at the Capitol website you can reserve a timed ticket for a tout (only way to get into the building) and also get a timed ticket to go up in the Washington Monument at the US Park Service website (nationalparks.org).  And have fun!

Tomorrow I'm hoping to have some fun around the city, and would LOVE to get out and see the popular area sights. I'll be driving in, and then doing lots of walking. I'd love to hear from actual people, who live there, what the best idea is, as far as a good area to park, and venture out from there? How bad is traffic? Etc? Key point is I'll be driving in. Suggestions? Please and Thanks. :-)

One place to park is pentagon city.  Parking is not that expensive and you can take the metro into the city.  What do you want to see?  Museums or sites to take pictures?  I would recommend taking the metro to smithsonian and starting from there.  Let me know if you need any more tips!  I work in the city and get asked by a lot of tourists for directions and advice.

I would get a ticket for the Big Bus, I think its around $49 bucks and you can get on and off at various stops, and the bus comes every 20 minutes.  Double Decker bus, and tomorrow should be a beautiful day.

Easiest and cheapest away around for tourists IMHO.

If you're walking, still leave the car behind.  You can hit a majority of the sites by walking.  Get off at the Smithsonian Metro stop and walk to all the sites.  DC is a pretty compact city as far as reaching the monuments.  Take time for a Capitol Tour, and sit in the gallery to watch your Member of Congress at work ... or not at work.  Stop by your  Representative and/or Senators office and ask for a gallery pass.

Great day to be walking around.

I think the Big Bus is a good bet. they can get really crowded during peak tourist times but mid September on a weekday isnt one of those times.
Lots to see..All pretty much free(you already paid for it!!) Enjoy the ride..Hope you have fun!
