I recently bought mine at BestBuy for $14.99. Then paid cash for $20 calling card to add minutes.. I used WiFi from Panera Bread (they have excellent soups and salads BTW) to get on to the Internet, which I got on using a TOR Proxy. It took several attempts as it was initially connecting me through Liberia, and the website kept rejecting my connection. Only when it connected me through the friendly country of Luxembourg, was I successful.  

Did I need to do all that? Not really.. I did it partly for fun and partly to see if it could be done in most private way known to mankind..  

I guess additionally I could have used Virtual Machine (Virtual Box) to for an extra layer of security, but I guess the aforementioned was good enough..  

I tried to use the library, but the library in my county needs you to use the library card in order to get on the Internet.  Not safe as my library card has my legal name on it.

Any recommendations for a good burner phone? Been pushing my luck and need to get a private number.

Are they all pretty much the same?

No experience with this but this is my recommendation. If you need a burner phone you are seeking complete anonymity = cash is your friend.  Go to a local store - supermarket, pharmacy, electronics store- not from a telco provider.  Purchase the phone and charging/minutes card with cash, not your bank card. Be able to replenish said phone with charging/minutes card, again paying with cash.  Keep it as a simple phone, a flip one will probably do the trick you want, don't get anything fancy. Do not use that phone for anything other than the hobby, have the ability to quickly delete information and do not store contacts- in case someone picks it up you do not want them seeing a list of 50+ women in the contacts :)  Don't pay too much for the phone in case you have to ditch it.

if you only worried about basic privacy as in someone finding a phone...not hiding from the government.

FreedomPop is voice over IP and it's 200mins & 500 txt free per month. Just an extra app you can download on ya phone and the number is good as long as you log in once every 60days...if not you lose the number. Figure you can download the app for play time and then delete it from your phone and app history when ya done. Also FreedomPop can be used as a private line if you bring a sprint phone and the service is still free plus $19.99 activation...just login every 60days as well

 
I feel anything you do of questionable activities is best hidden in plain sight with a slight cover. But freedompop seems like it would be up your alley no matter your choice. just my 2cents....

try the burner app on iOS.  Costs less than a tracFone, can burn the number and get a new one (or have multiple numbers) anytime.  Could use a different number every time or just have a new number.  Bury the app on your phone and delete the history in an instant...voila.

No extra phone to track or hide.  I use it for text more than phone calls, same privacy

Checked out the Burner phone app and it looks like a great option - certainly no chance of the SO finding the actual phone and asking WTF? The only thing I can't find is calls coming in. Had a real bad close call once with someone calling my cell while I was in the car? Does it ring thru like your regular phone?
