People DO read tweets like verified journalism, but the overall assumption is that anyone can post anything and it might or might not be factual. So nothing has to be retracted, no one is responsible for anything said, if later it's proved wrong it's okay. People who take it seriously ought to know better. Since they don't know any better, though, it's a great conduit for propaganda. Sort of like FOX.

That AP won't retract the tweet says something. It says that tweets are considered less as news and more like chitchat. The assumption being that it is a medium that isn't taken seriously.
