He may be trying this on a regular basis & only let you prevail because you stood up to him.  Who knows how many ladies he has done this to & will do again, many won't stand up to him like you did.

Mostly out of curiosity, what was stolen? Cash? Valuable item?

Why did he all the sudden decided to return it? Was it some kind of misunderstanding? Guilt?
Was he suddenly had return of senses that made him realize he would be blacklisted and you had his personal info?
