In the 14th and 15th centuries, the witch craze swept Europe. It targeted women seen as too sexual or too “free”, or women accused of giving abortions. One form of torture used on them was the “Pear of Anguish”. This was a pear shaped device made of iron that expanded inside its victim as the torturer turned the screws. It was his cure for the possibility of thinking “unclean” thoughts for girls. He was famous for his “cure” for argumentative, fiery girls. After he excised their clits, they became docile, meek, obedient girls for their families. The was to identify which girls were masturbators, was to look for girls who showed signs of lassitude, listlessness, pallor, feverish eyes, a general air of furtiveness or dissatisfaction. Parents were told to be ever on the watch because God forbid their daughters were masturbators, they would turn vicious and morally depraved.  

Paradoxically, doctors found a way to make money off of the “bad girl” “good girl” mentality. They devised a treatment that let hi-society women have orgasms without losing their social standing, because their orgasms came at the hands of physicians. Some doctors advertised “uterine massage” for nervous conditions and made fortunes masturbating their hi-status, ladylike clients to orgasm. Certain doctors created electrical masturbation machines. At this time, women had to wear their corsets laced super-tight(way beyond what we lace them today). They were expected to keep this tight lacing even throughout their pregnancies. Prostitutes were also targeted at this time(what else is new). Women accused of prostitution were rounded up, imprisoned and forced into brutal, and I do mean brutal, pelvic exams under the Contagious Diseases Act. All it took to be accused of prostitution was for someone not to like you. Other signs of being a prostitute were taking care of one’s appearance, or simply looking as though you could be sexually active. Suspects were kidnapped and held without due process in prison like institutions where they were abused, beaten, medically examined and treated. They could be held as long as 8 months away from their kids, families, and employment. These prisonlike hospitals were over flowing with girls they rounded up. So through the Victorian era, the pussy was seen as a mechanical delivery system for reproduction, the clit made women vicious, the uterus made them crazy and between the two of these, women were considered unfit for higher education. And women’s pleasure was their way to be dominant over men. Wow! I’m sure glad I live now instead of back then.
