nnabelle's on 4th Street directly across from the Marriott.
Excellent food and wine, efficient service, and charming, wonderful atmosphere in a building that's over 100 years old.

Not saying it's the best eatery in The City - just recommending it as a charming date-night hangout

My go to lately has been Farallon www.farallonrestaurant.com/

I love their locally sourced menu, their whisky flights and oysters. Service is always great (not at all snobby) and the location is charming and whimsical. Though I do prefer to make reservations to sit in their booths in the front. Its much quieter and more intimate than the main room, which can get a bit loud.

The main dining room was once an indoor pool, complete with tiled Poseidon, maybe from the 30's? In any case, you can ask to see photos of the original interior. Its quite neat

They are known for their seafood, but the best steak I have ever had I had there.

Would love to hear your favorites for date nights? In particular, somewhere not too loud, with ambiance

I don't venture out to San Francisco as much as I'd like to, but the best steak I've had was at 5A5. If you can stomach marbled/heavy/rich food, the Wagyu A5 Kobe beef rib cap is a thing of beauty.

The atmosphere is more busy and can get loud, as the restaurant turns into a lounge/bar with a dj and dance floor.

I normally frequent places where there's a lot of people watching going on. Hopefully someone else can chime in on classier venues as my reply focused mainly on your comment regarding  the steak.

What about Colibri, Hops and Homini, and how about for Show Dogs for a quick chicken sandwich or great sausage.  And let's not forget Bourbon and Branch for a cocktai

Had the pleasure of eating at Michael Minna the other day, what a treat it was!
