While motive is different than intent and must not necessarily be proven in order to obtain a conviction, sometimes it is necessary when a crime is so unfathomable (killing a wife and children) that a jury needs to be shown motive in order to convict the defendant.
Motive may also be shown to elevate a crime to a hate crime when two idiot supporters of your party's candidate piss on a man and beat him with a metal pole simply because they think he's Mexican.
