If it is for LE or something like that, a hobby phone might not be untraceable either.
Can you expand on this comment? I thought the whole point of the hobby phone was to pay cash, give no info, and then it essentially was untraceable. Is that not the case?

I was wondering which hobby phones you prefer, and what service you are using?  Went into AT&T and a few other places ... and there seems to be a wide selection.  Anyone have preferences in this region for service that works well?  Not that familiar with Virgin Mobile or Sprint.

I do have a few unlocked phones ... so, can I use those and simply add a plan?  Do most plans' minutes expire at end of 30 days or do some allow the minutes to expire longer than 30 days?

Thought about using VOIP or second number on my current phone; but, seems smarter just to keep it entirely separate.

This has been the subject of many discussions.
Think about the reasons you want a hobby phone. If you want to keep things from an SO, you might have a harder time explaining why you are carrying a second handset. That itself creates more suspicion. If you use your normal phone you can usually delete the call and text histories quite easily.

That said, if you decide you want one, T-Mobile has some pretty goof pay-as-you-go plans, You can add $10 when you need it and that last a month. $30 might last 3 months. Just be careful with the phone.

Like the one the OP in this thread said he checked out (from AT &T), even tough they might be "pay-as-you-go" with no long term contract, require you to give them a name, address, etc. on the account. That makes them very traceable.

The ones anyone can purchase at Target, CVS, 7-11, etc. (throw away phones) do not require any personal information to purchase. They are very inexpensive too (depending on which phone you choose). You simply buy minutes by purchasing a card with a code on it, call the number to activate the minutes on your phone and you're good to go. If you get a call from LE, simply toss the phone and buy another one. Not traceable back to you because they'd have no proof with your name on any account anywhere
