Long term, socialist societies are going broke all over the place.

Shit, short term they are too...Greece, Italy, Spain, etc.

The Enterprise is more like the Titanic bro.

Spock won't be born in 250 years or so. Maybe we can use a more current phrase like, "It Takes a Village", by none other than Hillary. On surface these types of comments look perfectly "logical", but they are generally used by assholes (Marx, Stalin, Castro, Chavez, etc. etc.) to justify sacrificing individuals or small minorities for the needs of the many. Socialism really doesn't have a very good track record, but if you don't have any money, no skills and/or education to make money, or no aspirations for money, then Socialism is probably a panacea.

P.S. Never was a Star Trek fan.

I can appreciate the contrast but,

Libertarianism is more of a political model. Socialisms (there are of course several flavors) are a combination of a political and economic system. Still, Mad Max is not an unreasonable conclusion to a libertarian system employing unfettered capitalism. But to conclude that socialism, even in some utopian conceptualization, typically will result in the world of Star Trek completely overlooks the primary problem with socialism. It’s not people. It’s limited resources, mainly natural resources. Whether it’s energy, arable land, habitable land, potable water, and all the other minerals and resources needed to create manufactured goods, there is absolutely no better method for their most efficient allocation than capitalism.

Mad Max definitely portrays and addresses what seems to resemble near end-times. But Star Trek never really addresses where all their stuff comes from. You just ask the food replicator for lobster and filet mignon and presto. Also, wars are still fought with far greater death and destruction than some Mad Max Winnebago-Hummer 8 vehicle crashing and burning. There are violent conflicts for the control of entire planets and solar systems. I think the most precious commodity that couldn’t be manufactured were things like the fictional Di-Lithium crystals that were required for the warp drive. Wars were fought over them. Remember the episode where one “highly advanced” civilization fought their wars entirely in computer simulations, then the designated number of “casualties” would voluntarily show up at the vaporization centers?

They did have one thing I always dreamed about though, the virtual reality holodeck that would of course make our entire little community here almost totally obsolete. Plus, I've always wondered what zero gravity sex would be like, but I digress. *sigh
