The number of mass public shootings using assault guns that occurred between 1994 and 2004 is the real number you need for comparison. The answer- a lot less than after 2004 when the national ban expired.
How many mass public shootings with assault weapons have occurred in New York since the ban? Zero. In Connecticut since the ban: Zero. Can you buy an assault weapon at a gun show in those states? Nope.
Obviously state bans are of limited value since a determined bad guy can always buy out of state. But if he is stopped for speeding or some other violation and they see the gun they can confiscate it.
Make the assault weapon ban national and you will see mass pubic shootings reduced
No one can say for sure that this particular event could or could not have occurred.

It's come to a point where Obama should appoint a blue ribbon committee to try to determine why they don't like us and to figure out what we can give them to make them like us. He won the Nobel Peace Prize you know.

A better question would be: do you think more restrictive gun laws, like better background checks, removing sales at gun show loop-holes, restricting or eliminating the sales and ownership of high capacity magazines and assault or assault types weapons, would reduce the occurrence of "this kind of thing," and significantly save lives? Yes, I do! 
I too own guns; hunt, have shot competitively on shooting teams. However, I've never felt the need to have an assault or assault type weapon, or high capacity magazine. I'm for laws restricting them, and I'm for keeping my guns. They really aren't mutually exclusive, though you and the NRA try to paint a picture of it being so. I know, I know, the old slippery slope!
