I have had good luck using date check for references.  I really like that the ladies can put their reference for you there so you don't have to ask them evertime for a reference.  I suppose the white list here on TER would work the same way although I started with Date Check before I was aware of the White List  However, if someone still wants to talk to a specific reference it is an easy way to refresh their memory when asking them to verify you by giving them your id code.

Being new and thus not having any references, I was thinking that my best bet might be to get screened through one of the services (p411, datecheck, etc).   Do providers generally want references IN ADDITION to this, or will getting screened by one of the services be enough?  Also, is there one of the services that providers prefer more than the others?  I have heard that some are focused on certain regions of the country.

The crazy thing is, there is one certain provider that I am dying to see so much that I am willing to see a provider or 2 beforehand JUST to get the references - is that f*cked up?

No.  It sounds like you have a plan.  Just be sure whomever you see is well reviewed by established reviewers.
