I didn't live in Athens but many of my good friends did (and went to school there).  It was only polite of me to come party with my friends often.  What kind of friend would I be to just let them party by themselves? And what a partying town...  But in my defense I often brought the beer.

Anyone remember the old Georgia Carafe and Draft Theatre?  I spent many an hour in there drinking beer, eating nachos, and philosophizing.  And trying to pick up girls of course.  Oh and sometimes we even paid attention to the movie.

Perhaps the highest I've ever been was when we watched Pink Floyd's "The Wall" there.  Ok, foguete - sorry buddy, I guess I did inhale once.  I hope I don't lose my "Upscale Gentleman" street cred.  :-)

I for one am certainly, unequivocally convinced that there was No Way In Hell to go to any concert in Athens in the 70s, 80s, 90s, or 00s without 2nd Hand Pot High. I finally stopped going once the young ladies started calling me Grandpa.

I remember seeing a Johnny Cash concert in the old OMNI in ATL back in the early or mid 80s. The lights went off, the NO SMOKING signs went on, and the bowl filled with a green fog within 30 secs. I never had the Munchies so bad before or since. Ring of Fire brings back good memories.

Hell, I saw THE WALL last year (?) at Phillips and there in front of me were 4 generations (and all ethnicities) of Americans.
I Shit You Not!
Some black teens 4 or so rows in front of us were trying to light their weed to no avail but the wrinkly old white couple (old looking compared to me) helped them out in exchange for a hit. Then they passed it around. I partook without ever holding it myself.  Cooperation amongst the classes!

Yep, The Pink Floyd Experience... one place where Americans leave their religions and politics at the security gate to have a good time.

SO to answer your query E: your Cred is intact to me if I can be afforded the same accommodation. You're a Gentleman and a Scholar!

Yeah, why isn't weed legal here yet again?
Oh, that's right - because we are in the Bible Freaking Belt.  And we all know that the collapse of society would follow shortly after marijuana reared its ugly, addictive head.

Just like society has collapsed in all those other heathen regions where it is legal.  Oh, it hasn't?  Society is booming in fact?  Hmmm.  Interesting.

Well, anyway all that moral stuff is just a slippery slope.  We can't expect human beings to think, reason, and act like adults can we?  Just like how society collapsed when same sex marriage was allowed by law.  Eh - what's that?  Society hasn't collapsed?  It's doing pretty good actually?  Ok...  so much for that theory then.

So why exactly can't folks exchange money for sex yet?  Oh yeah - society will surely dissolve when we allow that to happen.  That will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.  That will certainly do it.

And if it does - so be it.

It will be the end of the world as we know it.

And I feel fine.

I'm saying Amen with almost every line.

In a city where "Ugly girls know their fate, anybody can get laid."  (REM, "Tongue")
because

"What we want and what we need has been confused." (REM, "Finest Worksong")
so

"Let's put our heads together and start a new country." (REM, "Cuyahoga")
but

"Not everyone can carry the weight of the world." (REM, "Talk About The Passion)

I'm thinking I could write a half-way coherent post using nothing but my favorite REM lyrics.
good thread.

There was always the chance at some serious lip hugs.....

...February 27th. It hasn't been easy though. I've had to put other things in my mouth instead, like Quiche Lorraine or my fave, Rock Lobster ;-)

Surely you had butterbeans and private Idaho potatoes with your rock lobster?  :-)
