The history is Nixon was accused of financial skullduggery (to go along with his political skullduggery). He said, famously, "I am not a crook" and released his returns, despite the fact he was being audited. And, BTW, he ended up paying a penalty of almost a half million bucks. Then Ford, after Tricky Dick resigned in disgrace, released his tax returns. That was 1974. Since then EVERY Presidential candidate has released his tax returns.
More irony. In 2012 Mitt Romney delayed releasing his returns and, yes, Drumpf publicly said it was a mistake and would hurt him. Fast forward to 2016 and Donald says because he's being audited he won't release them. In February he said he'd do it in May or June. Now it's after the election.

That said, Trump needs to release his returns in a timely manner, audit or no audit. I do agree that in 99.99999% of the time, making your returns public while going through an IRS audit is a HORRIBLE idea, but no one else is the "presumptive nominee" for the nations highest office.
and Hillary does need to release those transcripts, it's not "deflection" it's a fair statement, until she releases those transcripts Trump will always have the issue to counter with. If I had to guess why Trump doesn't release his tax returns, one of four reasons.
1. He didn't give much to charity compared to most billionaires.
2. His tax returns show years where he had losses and paid no tax.
3. He's not as rich as he leads us to believe,
4. He's playing another media publicity game .
