So of $7.25 an hour that the government make us pay these deadbeats, the government will get back 10% each hour they work. And do the poor really need food stamps and health care? Let’s cut those too, and we will soon be able to achieve your vision of allowing billionaires to keep all that they own when they die so they can give it to family members who haven't earned it. Maybe he didn't care about the money, maybe he didn't plan to die, maybe it was too depressing to think about his last wishes. But I find it very hard to believe that someone that was surrounded by lawyers, would not protect his one sister and half siblings from the gov getting over half. I find it a shame so much that I have an apt next Wed to get an updated will. Not that I have an estate to protect like Princes. But I do have to protect what I worked for, from the government and any entitled person that feels like I owe them something they didn't work or pay for.

But it did come out that he had many charities that he had different front men (his deep religious belief of staying anon) I would think he would want a final say on where his money went and if he wanted those charities continued, or if he just didn't care once he was gone.
some are very helpful to make sure you are represented fairly in a criminal case, or a lawsuit where you were permanently injured from a reckless and irresponsible driver, wills, estate and tax planning, elderly care, and on and on. I have been helped. Years ago I even had an attorney take my case pro bono and I got to pick my jury with him and watch him turn the courtroom inside and out making the police and paramedics look like un compassionate human-beings.
I say lawyers are not all bad and deserving of a percentage for the knowledge of knowing all the loopholes.

And a huge chunk of the current 40% is fair bc it is really a tax on unrealized capital gains. 98% of the population pay no estate tax at all so we are talking about that 1% who can afford it. I don’t think you need to worry about paying any federal estate tax unless your estate is over 5 and a half or so million. That is when it kicks in. But be sure to tip your lawyer anyway when he prepares your will
but even a righty like me has to admit, I am not losing sleep over the "death tax" as long as it applies mainly to the super rich. I would like to see a "loophole" that protects family businesses so a family owned business doesn't have to be broken up just to pay the taxes when the Patriarch/Matriarch passes.
In the Prince case, I am not up in arms in the least. Every one of his heirs is going to be taken care of quite nicely and none of them will ever have to work another day (if they've ever worked) in their lives. The US is a land of opportunity where anyone can "make it" on their own. I don't believe the founding fathers were too concerned about protecting dynasties from the tax man and if the children of billionaires are reduced to millionaires after their parents pass, I am not going to be shedding any tears for the (usually) ungrateful little bastards who never had a hand in making a single penny they are fighting so hard to keep.

On Prince, I don't think it's fair no matter how much money he made or could afford to give his state and Fed gov. Too bad he didn't have a spouse and he could have protected the whole estate from the greedy gov.
I am not going to shed a tear about his "poor" children, they are still going to "one percenters" strictly by the luck of being born to a rich father. The fact that they will have a few million less apiece really doesn't get my juices flowing.
I am a LOT more concerned about some hard working businessman who through hard work, making the right decisions and often having made huge sacrifices in order to make his/her business a success having to pay over 60% of everything he/she ever makes to subsidize both the ultra wealthy and the poor who don't pay anywhere near their share. That's the person getting screwed. Prince's kids will be just fine.
I am more concerned with the later you described and where I fall in society, too. His death without a will is an eye opener to the greed that happens without proper planning. I am glad that it happened the way it did, at the time it did, to open my eyes to go see a lawyer and see if my ducks are in a row. I am even thinking of having a clause in my will, that if it's contested that person gets $1 and my love
If it's his siblings, I care even less, and yes I guess if I had been paying attention offspring are first in line well before siblings.
I think most people who have loved ones that you don't want fighting over your bones should take steps to make sure your wishes are "on the record" I am about the same age as Prince and I too do not have a will. I don't have kids either, but I do have various business interests that would be left in a mess if I were to get hit by a bus tomorrow.
I am making sure my real estate is worded right, with right of survivorship. My wishes for end of life treatment. My wishes to be cremated after every part of my body that can be used is donated. My wishes for how my business should be handled with the right to buy out the other heir or sell and split equally. And the right for one heir to buy out the other on personal property or sell and split equally.
I don't have heirs, I don't care what happens to my body after I am dead and I zero belief in heaven or hell. Now if things change, I either have a kid or fall in love with someone that I want to be sure is taken care of after I am gone, well then I will feel relieved in having my affairs in order. Right now, it simply isn't important to me what happens to my shit when I am gone.
