CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait - Disgrunted U.S. soldiers complained to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Wednesday about the lack of armor for their vehicles and long deployments, drawing a blunt retort from the Pentagon chief. “You go to war with the Army you have,” he said in a rare public airing of rank-and-file concerns among the troops...

Army Spc. Thomas Wilson, for example, of the 278th Regimental Combat Team that is comprised mainly of citizen soldiers of the Tennessee Army National Guard, asked Rumsfeld in a question-and-answer session why vehicle armor is still in short supply, nearly two years after the start of the war that ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

“Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to uparmor our vehicles?” Wilson asked. A big cheer arose from the approximately 2,300 soldiers in the cavernous hangar who assembled to see and hear the secretary of defense.

Rumsfeld hesitated and asked Wilson to repeat his question. “We do not have proper armored vehicles to carry with us north,” Wilson said after asking again.

Rumsfeld replied that troops should make the best of the conditions they face and said the Army was pushing manufacturers of vehicle armor to produce it as fast as humanly possible.

“You can have all the armor in the world on a tank and it can (still) be blown up,” Rumsfeld said

miss seeing their std comment....It was GWB's fault.

..............peeing on themselves over the clusterfuck we have at the VA. First, we must ask, why is the VA so overwhelmed with wounded vets? One word, IRAQ! Now which idiot allowed the U.S. to go to war with Iraq under FALSE pretenses? G.W. Bush! Our Dept. of Defense, led by Rumsfeld, sent our military to fight a war with inadequate protection against IED's. When Rumsfield was asked about this, his response was "you go to war with the equipment you have and not the equipment you want."

So, if any of you stooges have an issue with the VA, take it up with the initial creators of this mess, Bush II, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest of the Neo Con asswipes.

In fact they are coached by va advocacy groups how to claim a disability even if they aren't disabled. Most claims (80+% is the number I heard) currently come from vets who NEVER saw duty in a war zone. Before it gets blamed on the Iraq war you should look at some of the figures. You can earn a disability pension for diabetes, sleep apnea, planters warts... The list goes on and on. Many conditions that are fixable with surgery or other medical steps, but result in life long disability payments if the vet decides to not get treatment.
Advocacy groups coach vets to hide assets or give away assets so they don't have to pay for their nursing home care, what medical conditions they can't test for (ringing in the ears ect) and stear vets towards doctors known to be sympathetic. It's not always as simple as the va is full of people who can't do their jobs. Good doctors leave for private practice because salary is 30-50% more. To some extent even the best office personal do. So you end up with subpar employee performance compared to the private sector. Also the va is encouraged to hire vets to process claims ect who don't have the same computer/technology savvy a college grad today might have, but because they are vets they can't fire them when they don't perform well. In fact it's pretty hard to get fired from the va or any government job in general.
It's more than one war causing these problems and I think Vietnam vets are a large portion of the back log because of new allowances for agent orange. Also ww2 and Korean War vets are entering nursing homes and being treated for end of life conditions.

A quick look at the top ten posters board for the last thirty days shows 6 lefties and 4 righties, but I will concede the lefties are "top end loaded" and most likely account for somewhere over 70% of the actual posts. If you took my posts out of the equation that percentage would move closer to 80%.

Don't worry though, when fatgirl, FatVern and Laffy will all be here posting at the same time, none of this will matter as none of the rest of us will be able to get a word in edgewise anyhow, so what difference will it make?

The armor our guys went with the past 14 years did work and is the reason our KIA numbers are a lot lower than they could have been. Instead on blowing hot air nonsense on a FK Site Try volunteering some for wounded warriors . When you see all the missing limbs you will have a better understanding of how well today's armor works. The blasts that took their limbs would have killed many of them in any previous wars the US has been in.

could be better protected: "'Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to uparmor our vehicles?' Wilson asked. How do you explain that? Pointing to the past, and even if they were better protected than their comrades in WWII., does not explain it!  ;)

Many of the wounds are the same as in WWII, Korean, VN.  Modern medicine keeps the wounded alive and med-evac gets them to nearby urgent care much more quickly. Their lives are saved, but they are not whole.

The loss of a limb or a serious head injury in WWII, Korea, VN, was practically a death sentence unless you could be evacuated quickly.

Armor that saves lives is good but armor that protects against serious maiming is even better.

Battalion Recon was running recon by fire missions early on in the initial invasion. They had zero armor on the Humvees and were blasting through towns to draw fire. Did they cry about outside of their own circle ? NOPE Rumsfeld comment was BS but so was the whinny pogue. Shut your mouth and do your job.

Kerry with his completely ignorant comment about Charlie Hebdo somehow being justified. He's the one who should resign.

Great guys these liberals vote for. One lets thousands get butchered and the other says terrorism is justified.
