I guess we can chalk this one up to the "blind squirrel" phenomenon

I actually agree with our fake lawyer for a change, well except for the "Marikod' Foundation" of course. I do however highly recommend the GaGambler foundation which uses donations to aid single mothers and prostitutes in third world countries, and just like with the Save a child foundation, pictures of the women you are helping are available on request. The more the donation the less clothing she will be wearing of course. Feel free to contact me for the paypay account info. lol

I don't know or care what the problem is. But one thing is for sure. They make money out of nothing and it's not cheap.
I've seen same stuff from the dollar store at twice the price or more. I don't even believe they help others as much as they say they do. All this doesn't mean I'm not going to go and check it out and see what garbage still usable.

Of course the Onion is about as reliable a news source as some of the others that are linked here with regularity. I guess now that John Stewart has retired, millennials have to get their news from somewhere.

"Did you hear about the terrorist attack in Detroit last week? Over six city blocks were leveled, which caused at least $150 worth of property damage"

Been wondering lately where the bucks are coming from for Goodwill to fund the purchase of prime real estate and then the construction of new retail stores on that land in Maricopa County, AZ.  Brand spanking new Goodwill stores are springing up here like mushrooms.  Can there be that much money in the stuff that people have been unable to unload at their own garage sales?

eBay.

Sure, people sell their stuff on eBay, but there's no brick and mortar, no payroll/benefits, etc.  It's been the trend in recent years for retailers to shutter locations rather than build more, mostly due to competition from internet sales.  Maricopa County, AZ has like 71 Goodwill retail outlets, with ground broken for even more.  WalMart by comparison has 79 locations in Maricopa County.  It does not compute that all these Goodwill locations are able to keep their doors open selling obsolete electronics, Jane Fonda workout tapes, old dishes, hand me down clothing, and scratched furniture.  Yeah, we all know someone or have heard stories of someone who found a treasure at a Goodwill for a fraction of the real value.  But those scenarios are no where near the norm.

As outdated as his link was, it listed 20 Wal-Mart locations not 12 as he stated (notice there is a page 2).
http://www.city-data.com/locations/Walmart/Maricopa-County-AZ-2.html

The real number of locations is closer to 60 at least according to Wal-Mart (using Phoenix not Maricopa county so some cartographic skills are required).
http://www.walmart.com/store/finder?location=phoenix,az&distance=20

This is backed up by Google Maps
http://www.google.com/maps/search/wallmart/@33.4133296,-112.1410617,10z

I didn’t include the few locations in the southeast near Casa Grande, Coolidge, Sun Tan Valley and even Maricopa (who knew Maricopa isn’t in Maricopa County?) so the value of 60 is just a conservative approximation. Not 79 but a hell’ava lot closer than 12 or even 20.

A word of caution, people should be careful using those outdated links. Even after it’s admitted they are outdated (not so in this case; he just ran away), some people here will hold it against you in perpetuity

Brokeback-stabber Cowardly removed his post that distorted the facts on Wal-mart thereby removing the posts proving him wrong, bitch slapping  him and putting him in his place.

This is nothing new, he does this all the time and clearly is not man enough to take his ass kicking when he is proven wrong by solid irrefutable evidence.

Thank you

Guess I was logged in at just the right moment and had the opportunity to read those posts  moments before they were deleted.  That hoopla aside, can anyone shed light on the curiosity posed by my initial post on this thread, which is, how is Goodwill able to stay open with its' business model, and continue to build all these new stores?  Does this seeming paradox have anything at all to do with the DOJ raid on GW?

First, some of that land was donated to Goodwill by a real estate developer, so they did not actually pay FMV. Second, Goodwill is actually allowed to pay subminimum wages to the handicapped (although they pay Big Bucks to upper management) . In conjunction with their merchandise being donated, Goodwill’s  overhead is much lower than Wal-Mart.

Third, Goodwill as a non –profit is freed of much of the tax burden that Wal-Mart has. So now you are looking at huge margins on each sale. Fourth, Goodwill does get some 87 million a year on government grants. Note sure how that it parceled out to the state Goodwill entities but it does cover some expenses and programs

1 - That is not the first time I've read about real estate being donated... the upside to the donator being a huge tax break... is this true? I admit to a lack of information on the tax aspect.

2 - Seems to me, substandard wages to the worker bees with huge salaries to "the Bosses" is the de rigeur model for just about every company, non-profit or otherwise. But who is it that decided that "handicapped" workers can be paid less than their more "abled" counterparts, and why isn't THAT considered exploitation? Forrest Gump pushing a broom should get paid just as much as Will Hunting.

3 & 4 - Non-profit + government grants = Where do I get in line for some of this free money?

The idea was to encourage employers to hire veterans in the depression era who were severely disabled. Later, this seemed like a good idea for anyone severely disabled who would probably struggle to get a job.

Of course, when you have a disabled person who can produce at the same level as a non –disabled person, it starts to look like exploitation. And when your business model is to hire the handicapped on a national basis and you generate big profits as does Goodwill, it realy starts to look like exploitation. But as far as I know, it is still part of the Fair Labor Standard law and Good will pays less than the minimum wage to these people.

Donating real estate to a qualified charity can have big tax advantage bc -unless they have changed the rules - you can deduct the appreciated value without having to pay capital gains tax. So many financial planners recommend this when the children sell the family home that Mom and Dad bought for $200,000 and has now appreciated to $2 million, at least if the estate needs to reduce taxable income.

Can't give you any free money but how about free advice? You can always make a contribution to the Marikod Foundation which is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. These funds are always used to help unemployed porn stars pay for rehearsal time, a very worthy cause in my opinion
