being close a subway in manhattan is always helpful, but...

...try to avoid anything north of 96th street or too far south (wall street area). neighborhoods north of 96th tend to be hit-or-miss. wall street area is nice but can be confusing for those who may not be as familiar with it.

just my 2 cents...

So I was in the Midtown East/Lexington Ave area when I made my first visit to NYC in Feb, and I'm planning another visit in late July.  I'm wondering if Midtown is a must for visiting ladies or if being near the subway stops in other nice areas is ok too.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Time to repost the NYC Neighborhood Map, by which I mean MANHATTAN Neighborhood Map.

Many people will suggest Midtown (the pink "square with a hook") in the middle of the island. However, some people use Midtown to refer to a much larger area of Manhattan, spanning more blocks further E-W and N-S.

I suggest E-W limits of 3rd Ave on the East and 9th on the West. That keeps you close the subways that run N-S on Lexington Ave. and 8th Ave.  The south end of Central Park is 57th St.; for a newbie, I think the upper 50s is a good northern limit so you get stuck East when you meant to be West and vice-versa. Southern limit? Everybody has a preference: Wall St. is busy during the day but dries up at night. Midtown is the stuff of "The City That Never Sleeps."

Search the NY board for earlier "Neighborhood Map" posts which usually address the same question. Go back at least 350 days.

At least there won't be any snew this time of year.

Good luck!

Oh, nothin' much. What's new with you? (rim shot)

I left out a crucial "DO NOT":

"I think the upper 50s is a good northern limit so you DO NOT get stuck East when you meant to be West and vice-versa." It's easy enough to travel crosstown (E-W) but Central Park gets in the way on certain streets above 59th to 110th. You or a potential out of town guest could get frazzled if they realize that they are on EAST 91st and have 10 minutes to make it to an appointment on WEST 91st

as a local, i don't need to as it's ingrained in me. lol...

I live up in that area (W. 96th) but tend to think most people aren't going to want to go much above 72nd street on the west side at least. Lincoln Center seems to be a decent cut-off, maybe below 63rd-ish East Side as well. I tend not to care too much since I live here, but I have a feeling the smart bet is to stay within the grid and keep it between 14th Street and maybe 72nd at most. Not too far East or West either since subways accessibility is key.

If Midtown was required for NYC trips. After doing research I found out its just popular but not needed. A few girls went to chelsea while others go to FIDI. Since I'm based in NJ I haven't took the time out yet to really learn the city but hopefully I will soon.
