First, I'm not a doctor. This is simply my experience. Cialis literally left me hanging a couple of times. It gave me headaches and occasionally back aches. This was the 20 mg use as needed dose. I had no vision side effects. I took the Cialis 1 hour before the appointment time.
Viagra also gives me headaches but not as severe and occasionally not at all. Rarely does it give me back aches but it has happened. Viagra has never let me down. There has been a time or two where I had difficulty having an orgasm. I started taking the 100 mg pill. I took it 1 hour before the appointment. I now cut it in half. Since reducing the dose and taking it much closer to the appointment I haven't had any problem having an orgasm. Half the pill appears to reduce the side effects significantly and works just fine. I only take Viagra now. I take the half a pill on an empty stomach (usually) just before going into the in call. Greeting, shower, foreplay gives it time to take effect. I have occasionally had blue vision. My ophthalmologist says I have no issues in regard this. Regarding how quickly they take effect I found them to be equal.As I grow older I feel a need for a boost 
... and my Dr suggested Viagra, but I see a lot about Cialis on the web .. acts faster and lasts longer .. so seems a better choice. Any experience you can share?

I started with Viagra years ago - I have a bio-medical background and my doc was doing clinical studies for Pfizer so he was pretty free with prescriptions. I used the lowest dose as I was in my 50s and did not need a big boost. I found using ED drugs very helpful in "getting ready" when a bit nervous before a session, but it does not increase your chances of an orgasm. I really did not need it for sex with my SO at that time, but sort of insinuated I did with my doc. I got sinus headaches after using Viagra due to the nasal congestion that is a common side-effect - but I get sinus headaches pretty regularly anyway. I also had facial flushing (especially my ears). It can be quite noticeable in some guys. This is something to consider if you will see an SO or work associates etc within a few hours of taking the drug. Viagra flushing effects tended to come and go pretty quickly for me so that was one advantage.
When I moved my new doc wanted me to use Cialis when I told him about my side-effects. I also use a low dose (5 mg) just for an occasional boost. (I did use 10mg once and did not see a big difference.) I still get the sinus headaches which I now control with nasal decongestant spray. (Using an oral decongestant seems to interfere with the desired Cialis effects on me.) The flushing also occurs but is not as bad. The side effects with Cialis occur more slowly and can last a bit longer which is an issue for me with the flushing. I just don't hobby much any longer (retirement budget and just less desire to do so as I got older) so I don't use Cialis too much - actually more often on a vacation with the SO when we are more active than around the house.
I don't know that I would recommend one over the other - both have advantages and disadvantages. I have noticed that I "acclimated" to both drugs over time. That is, I had a lower level reaction to both drugs in terms of preventing ED effects and side effects - but both work
