but please take a moment to reflect why we have this holiday.

You see a lot of flags and veterans parades on Memorial Day, which is great!  But it is also a time to remember individual men and women who answered their country's call, but didn't return, and the families they left behind.

When I was a kid, my career Army officer dad had served 2 tours in Viet Nam by the time I was in third grade.  Today this seems normal (and extremely unjust by my reckoning) for reservists and members of the National Guard.  By the grace of God he came back home safely both times.  I have friends who are not so fortunate.

So please take a moment to reflect and remember.

BTW - I know this is totally off topic, but since the moderator and I operate on a same name basis, I don't expect any problems.

Enjoy the unofficial beginning of summer (if only that was the case here on the south coast of England, where it it is raining again, or is that still!!!)

Agree with most of your sentiments, but "extremely unjust", hardly.  Guards and reservists join up with the certain knowledge that they will eventually be called up for some type of service.  They don't get to pick the time or the place they are sent.  What is "extremely unjust" is that the vast majority of Americans don't have any idea of what is really going on in Iraq, or that the the vast majority of the troops, there and returned, regular and reserve/guard included, support the mission.  They have first-hand knowledge of the nature of this enemy, and know that defeat is not an option.

and try to keep this board non-political  (and I know that I was the one that introduced the subject).  I am more than happy to debate your points in another forum, but the most important thing today is to reflect and remember.

No problem Jazz - I never introduce politics to a non-political forum.  Just responding factually to the politically charged, "extremely unjust" comment.

And I want all the good wishes to apply to the incredible young guys and gals over there now, and recently returned.
