I'm sorry, I have a friend that suffers of the same condition but he's a totally sweetheart.  

Anyone who has experienced the excruciating pain of a gout attack knows that it is no laughing matter. Some sufferers have described the intense pain of a gout attack as similar to being burned by a flame. Others say it feels like they were skewered by a hot poker.

The REAL underlying problem causing the inflammation associated with gout, and the subsequent damage, is likely due to having chronically elevated blood sugar.  
High protein, high fat, low carbs (Protein type)
Low protein, low fat, high carbs (Carb type)
Mixture between the above (Mixed type)

While exercise is not recommended while your joints are in pain or when it might cause further injury, once your gout is under control, exercise is needed as a necessary adjunct to a healthier lifestyle. Exercise will even help prevent further attacks by increasing circulation and normalizing your uric acids levels, which it does primarily by normalizing your insulin levels.

Here are some good recipes for massage blends that you can use for quick relief:

Mix 1 – Frankincense, Peppermint and Chamomile Blend
Mix 2 – Marjoram, Lavender and Rosemary Blend
Mix 3 – Tea Tree Oil Blend
Mix 4 – Footbath / soak for gout pain.

Been dealing with it off and on now for a few months. Is this a gift that keeps giving or will change in diet fix it. Sure hurts like a motherf.

It flairs up and eases for no apparent reason. It runs in his family but I really don't know if it's hereditary. Btw, he's a fit guy who eats healthy

Great. Not. Its incredibly painful. Been holed up for 3 days. Even had to tell a date no thanks.

Forgive this over simplification and be aware there are many approaches to acute and chronic gout.
The acute attacks occur when uric acid crystals cross the "lining" around a given joint. So either when uric acid levels are rising or falling the time is most ripe for an acute attack.  
In general, the acute attack can be relieved by the use of relatively high doses of prednisone or other steroid for a relatively short time.  Generally relief is relatively quick. (In my experience, within 24 to 36 hours.)
To prevent further attacks, there are a few meds that lower the uric acid. Your physician will pick the best one for you. He/she will also give you a very low dose of a very old medication (a form of colchicine in a very low dose) during the period when he/she is lowering your uric acid to prevent another acute attack.
It is important to control uric acid because uric acid can cause kidney stones, kidney damage, and joint damage.  
Physicians generally know how to handle the problems of gout

A friend has been on it for years and it has stopped further gout attacks.

I believe I have the female version. A sharp numbing pain at the tip of my big toe underneath the nail. Woke me up out of my sleep the other night. Seems to come only when the weather Is cold.
