I think you will find that going on your own is better for more than just financial reasons.  When I worked for an agency, I always asked my clients how they were screened and I was VERY disappointed.  Eventually my agent got sloppy and got busted.  You are talking about your safety and your health... and your intuition and your effort of screening is going to be much better than if it's left to someone else to do.  Besides, LE go after agencies... it's a more powerful bust.  So, you're overall much better on your own.  I'm all for agencies... in the modeling world... but in this world, you are putting your life in someone else's hands.

I recently signed up to be represented by a local agency, with the specific goals of gaining experience, building up a client-base and acquiring reviews and recognition in order to move on and start working independently.

I am currently still booking through the agency, and it is extremely convenient.  They take care of all the paperwork/dry aspect of the business and I only participate in the fun part of the job (meeting new people!).  That being said, I, however, would prefer the type of relationship that an indy can have with her clients (I think it leads to more intimacy, better communication, and ultimately, the best GFE I could provide.) I would also appreciate the greater flexibility and control over my schedule.  And the fact that I don't have to share my earnings is another perk.

So while I'm still being represented by the agency, I am working on developing a website on my own. I have no intentions of trying to bypass the agency, instead, I will hold off until I feel ready to be on my own , and then start informing my regulars about my new plans.

My question:
Is this kosher? I wouldn't want to seem ungrateful to the agency in any way.  From browsing this site, I realize that some of the best-reviewed and most-loved independents have gotten their start with an agency.  Were I on my own, I would've been unable to get the exposure I needed to start off on the right foot.  But is the way I'm going about this questionable/sketchy in any way?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you!

If one of my employees leaves to improve their lot in life, I wish them well.  I also hope that they have the courtesy to give me some time to adjust the workload to others.  I'd hope that they wouldn't steal my clients or trade secrets.  Your job is a little different, in that the personal aspect of it makes "stealing clients" an issue.  Ultimately, your client makes the decision to see you, or keep the convenience of the agency relationship.  You should also be prepared that once you inform the agency that you're leaving, your appointments will probably drop off a lot.

Good luck with the move

what you are doing.  I would think most independents worked for an agency at one time or another.  Do you have any reviews?  Best of luck.

Although there is much savvy to be learned in this biz it certainly doesn't require a degree in rocket science. As long as you don't orchestrate your departure to include the agency's clients your karma is clean.

You need to make a clean cut with the agency and do it in the nicest way possible, you will have to start from scratch. your regulars may be nice guys who see you often but they are the agencies clients. id think long and hard before you took them with you.

you dont want an agency mad at you because you left them not on good terms. that could be very bad.

you really are going to have to start over but you have half of the biz down ...the fun part :) there is a whole lot to learn in the other half and a whole bunch of trial and error. if you're smart and really think about the best ways to do things for you, you can cut that learning curve down a lot.

ive always been an independent girl and love the control over my business it gives me. remember it is a business, be a smart business women and you will be fine!

good luck and stay safe,
jenny
