Original location on 1st Avenue and 61st Street, and a second location of West 23rd.   I have been a fan for many years, and it has the benefit of being open until very late.  Also a great experience is Sushi Nakazawa, expensive and difficult to book but very much the real thing with the absolute finest ingredients.

My real find, however, is Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar (which oddly has no liquor license and you have to bring your own).  At this tiny location on York Avenue and 73rd Street, which has three seatings per night, and requires reservations, you will find perfect Omakase at an affordable price, easily half the price of Seki, Yasuda, or any of the top places.

Been eating Sushi  and PUSSY now for almost 40 years -- Sushi in LA is the BEST bare none even the average places beat NYC -- now on the other hand PUSSY pretty much neck an neck!!

The Orchard St location is the best, although the Columbus Circle is also awesome. CC has no cell service though.

Blur ribbons space in Sullivan street is small. Get there before 5:30pm or you are in for a long wait

For a fashionable downtown crowd try Omen (113 Thompson) or Brushstroke (30 Hudson). The food, crowd, and setting are fantastic at both.
I also love Jewel Bako (239 E 5th).

Uptown I agree with what's already been posted here re: Sushi Yasuda, Sushi of Gari and Blue Ribbon (in that order). These three are quite traditional and have a low key atmosphere. The focus is definitely on the food more than the space.
