Cabs and Subway

Subways to go north and south. Cabs to go east and west, unless you're at 42 or 14th.

Enjoyed the time I've had with one of my favorites, a provider from here in Chicago who makes NYC a second home, and on both occasions we had a terrible time getting around.  Cab drivers were bitching about Uber, driving by empty, or simply not available.  Never had this problem

So my question is this.  I am planning on meeting someone new or two someone's new.  My regular business starts at 8:00 am in the Financial District.  Seems like would be the best place to get a room . . . but if I want to play later midtown, I'm seriously concerned I will get stuck.  I can stand being late for business, but not play.

This is not a "where should I stay" post.  It's more a "how do you cope with what's happened to the cabs" post.  Should I rely on Uber?

I would look for a yellow cab, and if you don't find one after 5 minutes, hop on the subway.

Subway is the quickest and most reliable mode of transportation in Manhattan.
The E, A, C, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and R trains all stop in the Financial District.

I dislike Uber.

Uber can charge your credit card whatever they want, and you don't find out until after the ride, via email, after they already charged you.
I was overcharged a couple times, and they wouldn't refund me. Bastards.

I don't have experience with catching cabs in the Financial District, but they're easy to find in Midtown.

(EXCEPT: when it's raining, during rush hour or during UN week or Pope visits.)

I feel that yellow cab drivers are even more appreciative when you ride with them, since less and less people are using them.

agree subway-  doesn't matter if it is a cab or uber- if you are stuck in traffic you aren't going anywhere-  remember the famous scene from Barbarians at the Gate when they are stuck in traffic during the Nabisco buy-out talks and they get out of the cab and run to the meeting place?-  the subway for the most part runs pretty much on schedule so you can go to MTA's site-  put in the time you want to arrive and it will tell you what train to take

These apps are great if you want to move 'quick' around Manhattan (and the outer boroughs.

I'll only use a cab if I'm in a rush...otherwise the subway. I live on Long Island, where the cabs are much cheaper (but they can't take street hails, a person must call for a pickup).

Lyft has an option called lyft line- so you know what you are paying from point A to point B. The only down side is that it's their share option so the if someone calls a lyft and your driver is going their way he's obligated to pick that person up- so you'd be sharing the ride (at no extra charge to you of course!)

I've used lyft hundreds of times and I only had to share a ride once, so either it doesn't happen often or I'm just one lucky girl!

and sure the subway is another option, I'm not a fan of the rush hour crowdedness though.

I've never ridden the NY subway.  Looks like that's my answer.

I have a real problem with Uber.  Every worker is getting their legs cut out from them, and it wasn't like cab drivers were getting rich to begin with.  I wonder who the plutocrats are going to sell their goods and services to when everyone else is poor.  About ready to vote for Sanders.

I have not seen any Plutocrats driving Uber, instead I see people working hard to get ahead in life on their own. The  popularity of Uber may be due to offering clean cars and friendly dependable service.

I use uber whenever possible, and almost always have a bad experience when I'm stuck with a taxi. Subways are the fastest way to get around town in the middle of the day though, especially in midtown. Manhattan is a pretty small, and crowded island.
