I often post the Neighborhood Map but I'll just include a link to FloraFaun's thread.
I usually recommend:
"The most convenient places for these activities are "midtown" which conveys that pink section on the map but sometimes also the surrounding areas. My advice is to avoid being too far east (First Ave) or too far west (11th Ave). The subways are mostly between Lexington (NS on the east side) and 7th Ave (NS on the west side). I'd say to stay between 3rd Ave and 8th Ave at the E-W extremes and maybe 14th St (southern limit) and 59th St (northern limit). Those are GENERALITIES; lots people work in the Wall St / Financial District, too. Lots of people are fine going up to the 70s-80s-90s, but the numbers dwindle.

If you don't know NY, here's a simple guide: the Avenues run N-S and the Streets run E-W.
1st Ave. is on the East Side, 11th Ave. is on the West Side. 5th Avenue is the official middle.
Let's say you're on 47th Street. If you are EAST of 5th Ave, your address is ### East 47th St. If you are WEST of 5th Ave, you're address is ### West 47th St. Yep, there two ### 47th Street addresses, one is ### W. 47th and the other is ### E. 47th.
Midtown, east or west, is usually good. Penn Station is on the west side. Times Square is on the west side. Grand Central Station is on the east side. But the "Central" station is very CENTRAL to getting almost anyplace else in the city
Hempstead, NY
Ronkonkoma, NY
Rockville Centre, NY
Avoid these areas at all costs. I've worked New York for nearly 10 years and these are two places I would not work in at all anymore. Too many LE and unsafe characters walking around, especially at night.
Rockville Centre is a no-go (again high LEO presence. Scary stuff).
NYC is great, Times Square not really because I've heard LE has been doing stakeouts there to bust providers.
