Thanks, but it was an actual number like this:
1-571-555-5555.  I have never seen a calling card number with a 571 area code.  That is like a cell phone number.  I really appreciate your input.
Take care,
CJ

Ok I received a call today from a potential "friend".  I couldn't answer the phone because I was in the tanning bed and I couldn't reach it.  Anyway, after I was done, I went to call the number back.  It rang and then said that the call couldn't be completed as dialed.  So I tried again, same message.  WTF?  He called me from it, so why couldn't I call it back?

Any explanation would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Charlie Jean

the phone number displayed may not be set up for incoming calls.

CJ,
if a person called you from their office phone, it's possibly the specific line (number) that called you can't except incoming calls and they use a "main" number for all inbound calls.  Not that uncommen for  large phone systems.

I use a program called Skype to make phone calls from my computer to landline or cell phones sometimes.  Since the computer is sending IP packets over the Internet, which are then modulated and routed onto the phone system by Skype's network, you are not really getting a phone call from a device that has a phone number.  I suspect some VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phones work like this too, although you do get a number from VOIP providers like Vonage.  Not having VOIP service, I am not sure whether caller ID systems properly recognize the incoming VOIP caller's number or not...

So, when you call someone from your landline phone or cell it "disguises" and shows a totally different number on the recipient caller ID.
There is a whole thread about this service on the NY "other" board:

"Camophone, hide your REAL caller ID"
Hide your caller ID to providers and agencies, but get through by giving them a different one. The service is here...
