I expect nothing more from Bill Moyers.

When I saw the author’s name I was not surprised, but have you asked why he stopped the story where he did? Maybe his editor told him he had run out of word space. But why did he only tell a piece of the story?

Indeed those Jim Crow days were dark decades in U.S. history with a death toll overshadowed only by wars foreign and domestic. Also overshadowed of course by the centuries of actual slavery. So what preceded these decades of the KKK, claiming to be Christian and their murder by lynching? Oh yea,  it was the U.S. Civil War where more than approx. 700 Thousand citizens, more than all our other wars combined, died in order to end the original sin, slavery. Indeed, almost half of them died on the side attempting to perpetuate it and the bitterness the South felt combined with centuries of bigotry was all too harshly reflected and inflicted upon the newly freed slaves and their descendants for far too long.

One thing Moyers failed to point out is that in similar to ISIL Sharia Law, the state and local governments were complicit in the persecution. I wonder just how many all white juries, either sympathetic or just afraid of the KKK, rendered terrible sentences, capital or otherwise? But then Moyers also, more importantly failed to recognize (or did HE forget?) that it was white, mostly Christian citizens that used law and order to eventually beat back the KKK and caused their numbers to be reduced from several million a hundred years ago to a few thousand today. To be complete it needs to be included that these gains weren’t completed and codified until the Supreme Court stepped up in 1954, ending legal segregation; followed by the courageous Civil Rights Movement led by MLK.

I hope it doesn’t take a hundred years for the present situation to resolve.

guys like you that bring up shit from 80 yrs ago as if it happened last week?

Just like the Prez bringing up the Crusades from a thousand years ago.  Now that's relevant????

Seriously dude, if you hate this country so much why don't you go fuckin live in the Middle East.  I'm sure you'll be allowed to speak your mind there!

I see you want to take the easy way out with your comment.

So I will make this very simple for you!

When you point out the good and bad history of this great country.

It shows that history can repeat itself.

If we are not careful with not learning lessons from the past.

The fact that you wrote this response comment shows you want to hide from it.

Thanks for showing how stupid some people still are in this country!

that nobody here wants war after the latest wars?
The history of humans is there, super evil. Sometimes it along with religion is used to make more war and history.

Are parts of history being used to excuse not going to war, this time?

Maybe sometimes we want war and do whatever to start them, even LIE. But the our wars are supposed to be over fast and effective. If they drag too long and the result is not what was expected, people get tired of them.

The News say that they in the Middle East should fight their own wars and this and that. But they expect the policeman of the world to do it as usual. And whatever the policeman is not into fighting mode as of now.

For one I see them creating their Islamic State Caliphate.

But what do I know or care about past, present or future history.

We still have much of the same mentality of the Crusades, but without the religious ideology, when it comes to mercenaries called contractors who go to work for the likes of Blackwater. Many of them just like to fight and kill and make good money at it. Others, don't have much of any other skills other than fighting and killing, so they sigh up as well. The result is the same. The government, often ours, and companies, usually multinational corps. get all the spoils of war and leave much of the indigenous people of the land indigent.  ;)

Before you get on your high horse, for many years the Dems were the party of slavery and  Jim Crow. Obama forgot that.

I guess you miss my earlier comment when I mention the same thing in another thread?

So I see why the GOP and their supporters hate this subject.

Just like the southern Democrats in the past and now today the Republican party.

Some people in this country deep down still want to practice this and hate the fact you can't openly.

You can't run from real history or facts!

Also read next time before making a ass out of yourself. LOL

You come on this board and repeatedly call people "stupid" yet you are unable to properly use a subject and verb.

If you want anybody to take your comments seriously then make an effort to express your thoughts in a reasonable and intelligent way.

I see all of the GOP scum are starting to come out and prove my points.

You guys are cowards and hide behind anything to change the subject.

So if you are worried about grammar so much.

Then get off this broad and go get a English teaching job.

Just know you are not fooling anybody. LOL

Fact: we have an African American president, the Attorney General of the US is African American
...and there's Colin Powell, Maya Angelou, Condoleeza Rice, Toni Morrison, Thurgood Marshall, Clarence Thomas ...  get it now?  African Americans in this country can be whatever they want to be so get over your lynch mob bullshit from the 1930's.

YOU are the one perpetuating hate here!

bigguy30509 reads

So if you cannot understand the points of the story.

Then that is your problem and not mine.

Also it's no hate on my part either dumb ass.

I did not write the story or was not around back then.

The fact you cannot handle the comparisons says more about you than me.

It's showing that both groups were scumbags and how people can use religion for hate!

"African Americans in this country can be whatever they want to be...."

If they live long enough, and they or their families can afford the educations of those whom you mentioned! ;)

CltLuvr531 reads

facts apply to white, Asian and Hispanic and anyone else!

Seriously, afford an education? ... shows how little you know about education. There are so many grants, federal aid and scholarships that almost all citizens can afford a college education ... if they want it! People that want an education do it everyday. Or you can feel sorry for yourself and blame others for your situation.

From the Pew Research Center:
From 1996 to 2012, college enrollment among Hispanics ages 18 to 24 more than tripled (240% increase), outpacing increases among blacks (72%) and whites (12%). (The Census Bureau did not publish Asian college enrollment figures before 1999.)  In fact, for the first time in 2012, Hispanics’ college enrollment rate among 18-to24 year old high school graduates surpassed that of whites, by 49% to 47%

First of all, I said nothing about a college education. I said: "they or their families can afford the educations of those whom you mentioned." Those whom you mention have higher degrees than just an AA or Bachelors degree, and from prestigious institutions. And, going to just any Junior, City or four year college is not the same as going to the 'right' schools. Comparing the money invested in a child being prepped by his or her parents to go to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, etc. pales in comparison to families who have their child go to a state school using scholarships and grants. Those being prepared for those exclusive schools have their expenses begin at the enrollment to expensive, exclusive, private nursery schools, and it continues the same, all the up through high school. In all those school academics are important, but the true benefits involve coming to know the 'right' people. As the saying goes: "It's not what you know, but who you know that is important."

Second, you totally ignored to story that shows people of color are still being murdered here because of their skin color.  ;)

Perhaps you should think for a split second before you fire off such retorts from you cute little alias!  ;)

However, I sincerely appreciated you serving as my spellchecker, since mine doesn't seem to work in the subject lines, and often I can't see the small print accurately.  I definitely would no want to be misunderstood! ;)

When do you turn 13? Are you aware this board is for adults?
If you want to go on a guilt trip pack your bags along with Moyers
My point is that the Dems changed their position on civil rights just like Christianity had a  reformation.
It is 2015 and we are talking about ISIS.
Now you will post back saying I am full shit with your excessive exclamation points.
Dismissed.
