........If the old man had used his gun and fatally shot the walmart vigilante, would it have been self defense?

A simple errand turned violent for Clarence Daniels this week when he went to Walmart for some coffee creamer and wound up in a chokehold.

Upon arriving at the Walmart in Florida’s Hillsborough County on Tuesday, the 62-year-old Daniels, grabbed his handgun from his car and slipped it into a hip holster underneath his coat. Watching this from inside the store was Michael Foster, a 43-year-old described by the Tampa Bay Times as “a well-intentioned vigilante.” As soon as Daniels walked into the store, Foster tackled him, shouting, “He’s got a gun!” Ignoring Daniels’ repeated yells of, “I have a permit!” Foster proceeded to put him into a chokehold. When sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, they confirmed that Daniels was indeed a concealed carry permit holder and Foster was arrested and charged with battery.

...black, or else the cops would have killed him, claiming he made a furtive gesture toward his waistband, even though he was unarmed.

So wannabe hero meets permit to carry!

This is the same mentality that got John Crawford killed in Ohio. Some lunatic witnesses an individual with a firearm(replica/real) and they lose their mind and automatically think the person is going to kill someone with said firearm.

I've said it before, these incidents are a direct result of the Democratic anti firearm hysteria.

I actually believe the "vigilante' is suicidal, and tried to commit suicide by armed citizen.

I disagree. This is not a liberal issue and your should really try for once NOT to paint an issue as such.  The problem is we see active shooter situations, gun violence and other negative images on a near daily basis. People are correct to be concerned when they see a person carrying a weapon in places where one would not expect to see one and push in some conservative states to expand open/concealed carry only exacerbates the problem. I'm a firm believer in the 2nd Admendment, but I think there is nothing wrong on placing reasonable restrictions on gun ownership, especially when it comes to the mentally ill.  If I owned an establishment such as Walmart/Starbucks, etc...my goal is to try to create a safe and comfortable environment where my customers could shop. I would not allow a person to carry a firearm into my shop, despite what local laws may dictate.

BTW, it wasn't this public mentality that got John Crawford killed, it was the poor training and the cowboy attitudes of the cops that killed him.

What if the guy carrying the gun had been an off duty cop, or someone else who by necessity was carrying a weapon? How would the story be spun then?

BTW, I don't think off duty cops should be allowed to carry guns, there is no legitimate need for it.

and I am sure that you don't believe that anyone, with the possible exception of on duty police officers, should be allowed to carry a firearm, do you?

It's kind of hard to carry on a conversation when two people are that diametrically opposed on any topic. To some people "common sense" gun legislation would simply eliminate private gun ownership completely. How can we possibly have a rational discussion on this topic?
