Military contractors always raise various versions of the government contractor’s defense when they get sued and with good reason – they rarely have discretion to do things their way and must follow government specifications.
The company’s lawyers – not “the Republicans” – are the ones who advised the company to raise this defense. And they would have been liable for malpractice if they had just allowed the lawsuits to proceed. They may still prevail on the GC defense - it may ultimately be a question for the jury. All the court has said so far is they are not entitled to immunity from suit. Mr. Cheney deserves a lot of blame for the tragedy in Iraq, but not for this. And he didn't lie about WMD- he just got it wrong (he did lie about the torture). Don't make me sic Jack on you...soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. KBR, a former subsidiary of Halliburton, allegedly built shoddy showers that were responsible for electrocuting Staff Sgt. Ryan Maseth SEVEN years ago. KBR tried to claim they couldn't be sued because they were an "extension" of the military.
So not only did Dick Cheney's lies cause American soldiers deaths in Iraq, his former company killed more American soldiers because of their shoddy construction. And Cheney's KBR tortured the mother of the soldier by dragging the case through the courts for SEVEN years, all the way to the Supreme Court before she finally got the right to sue them.
