The Hamptons does not do it for me.  I mean, it's nice, peaceful, beaches, etc.  But slightly pretentious.  And 2+ hours away. Try Nyack, NY.  You won't be disappointed!

1) It's friendly
2) The house we stayed in was haunted by an early 20th century Broadway actress!  I've read that a LOT of the houses there are haunted.
3) The house was on the Hudson and the views are spectacular- think The Great Gatsby.  
4) Theres a beautiful Rockefeller farm not too far away where you visit the goats, sheep, pigs etc and eat them for dinner  
5) Across the river is Sleepy Hollow with plenty of creepy, old cemeteries with many of NY's founding fathers.  

Plus, it's an easy 1 hour train from Grand central

However, if that kind of get away interested you.  Consider a trip to Vermont in the fall when the leaves change.  I did a road trip not to long ago and stayed at a number of very quaint B&Bs and explored the state.  Fall is the most expensive time of the year to go and places sell out quickly, but it was so enjoyable.

I wish I was in Nyc this July 4th weekend . I love staying in the city , always something going on .

Take the 7 train only 1 stop from Grand Central to Queens.  Look for the Manhattan skyline when you exit the subway.  Walk toward the river.  The fireworks will be to the South (left as you face Manhattan).
