In public or at home?

Seriously- this really is only a NYC convo Sindee.

I think rats are cute when I see them in the subway. I often cheer them on silently in my head! You go little guy! Survive! Don't get run over by the train!

I would literally FREAK OUT if I saw a rat at home or anywhere in building including basement.

Roaches on the other hand... I'm completely and utterly disgusted by them. Yet in older NYC building- especially ones that are above/around restaurants, they occasionally appear, particularly in the winter. I've seen em in Brooklyn, Queens, Spanish Harlem, Chelsea, Tribeca and midtown. Inside apartments.

I've never seen one in my current apt, but it's probably because I religiously put one of those combat things in each room near the radiator (a roach could live for ages without food, but not without water- so they go to wherever there is water or steam). I live in a building that's over a hundred years old and over two restaurants. Roaches happen in NYC. But it's easy to "combat" them, and NEVER have to see them.

Kiss me,

Kat

This evening, I left an appointment in BK and was waiting for my train at Jay St.  Suddenly, this giant black guy nearby jumped and screamed!  I looked over to see what happened and there was a rat at least 10inches long casually walking on the platform, completely unfazed by all the humans.

I thought that it was funny!

I'm not scared of rats at all.  They just seem like chihuahuas or possums or any other little creature.

Roaches, however, are the epitome of filth and I am TERRIFIED by them.

So, if you were stuck waiting on a train platform with either rats or roaches, which would you choose?

Well, cockroaches are not associated with any disease or plague or anything like that.  Some people have allergic reactions to cockroach poo or dead cockroach parts but they do not transmit bacterial or viral disease.  And they don't bite, they tickle.  Cockroaches run away and will keep running away and crawl through the tiniest crack to get away from you and your rolled up magazine (Hustler, if you have one handy).

Rats, OTOH, can bite and bite hard and easily break human skin with their sharp teeth.  They harbor and transmit a number of diseases.  You can chase a rat but, if cornered with no escape, you are facing a vicious enemy and the tables might be turned

I'll take your word for it!

There's nothing logical when it comes to my ridiculous phobia of roach-type bugs.  They freak me out so much, I don't think I could willingly let one crawl on me for 1000.  For 10,000 I'd try really hard, but might have to give up on it.

I'm scared of heights, too, but not so much that I couldn't skydive or something if I really put my mind to it.

I don't think I could let myself be covered with bugs to save my life.

And when you've got a fear that's that unreasonable, it doesn't matter that rats can hurt us and the little bugs are completely vulnerable next to us.  I choose rats

After the party walking to a nearby bar for a nightcap.  The damned thing ran through like a bullet...over with before you realized what happened.  The lady I was with thought it was a cat...

I am seriously not scared of anything except roaches/waterbugs. If I saw one, I would react like that gentleman and probably run screaming to the other side of the platform.. :(

Can you imagine seeing one in your apartment?!  You and I would probably seriously move out.

Ps: Soon after moving to NY, someone recommended the movie Joe's Apartment to help with roach phobia.  It was an extremely adorable movie and it did help a bit.  But I haven't seen a real roach since watching it, so doubt the results will really last in reality...
