Seems like it was an effort to get free publicity for her Senate campaign:
"Eric Goldman, a professor at the Santa Clara University School of Law, said he was surprised by the initial charges because Harris was among 47 state attorneys general who asked Congress in 2013 to help change a provision of the Communications Decency Act that they acknowledged protected Backpage from prosecution."
It would be nice to see the defendants file a malicious prosecution lawsuit and the state and Harris.
Keep in mind Harris is one of the early favorites for women to contest for POTUS in 2020.
I am no fan of bible thumpers that want to control every aspect of our lives "in the name of God" but feminists and soccer moms are the biggest enemy of P4P world wide, not the church believe it or not. If you doubt me, just check out every country where P4P is already legal/decriminalized and where there is pressure to recriminalize prostitution between consenting adults. In almost every case it's feminist women's groups that are leading the charge, not the church.
This is a sad commentary indeed. You might think that feminist groups would be first to support a woman's right to do as she damn pleases BCD without interference from the state. We have a local chapter of SO (Sexworkers Outreach) dedicated to decriminalizing and destigmatizing voluntary sexwork. I was glad to see the organization was being run by women. If only they all felt the same!
For example, many progressives back the legalization of marijuana among other recreational drugs, but others back its being banned claiming the damage drugs do to people in general and under-privileged groups in particular.
Same with gambling and similar vices, there is always a divide among otherwise aligned groups
Usually that divide is over money. I always follow the money, because why would someone care about marijuana being legalize unless they thought they would lose money on it

How are we supposed to catch these traffickers, etc. if we don't know where to look for them? Too many regular escorts rely on backpage for a good part of their living. If it was shut down, many of them would end up out of work or back on the street. I realize they are trying to stop human trafficking, but shutting down ad sites isn't the way. The ad sites actually make it easier for LE to catch them.
