I agree about, and already stated that spending any money at all for interdiction is a waste

It's not just a waste of money, it's a waste of human lives, countless thousands of our citizens imprisoned for recreational use of drugs that hurt no one but possibly themselves is a travesty in a supposedly free country.

Drug use will only go down when drug use is considered passé, gross, stupid, or otherwise made unpopular by peer pressure. Similar to what is finally happening with smokers. Fear of death had next to no impact on smoking, being treated like second class citizens for their dirty, nasty habit has had a tremendous effect on reducing the number of smokers.

Which position do you embrace:

1) The moralist,  that something is morally wrong with users.  Zero Tolerance against users (Reagan)

2) the Temperance, that the drug is addictive.  Drug smugglers and dealers are the root of the problem

3) the Disease of Addiction, neither the dealer or user is responsible for addiction.  Focuses on treatment and rehabilitation.

I embrace the idea that addiction is a medical disease, and it was never the police's responsibility to punish.  I embrace Jimmy Carter's idea that the punishment should never be worse than the drug.  we should decriminalize now

although some of the positions are worse than others.

I am a believer that we are all responsible for ourselves and as long as we are not harming others, the government should as much as possible "mind it's own business"

Not all drug users become addicted or even generate any serious problems due to their use of recreational drugs. Those people should be left the fuck alone to enjoy their choice of drug in peace, whether that drug be Scotch, pot, cocaine, or what have you. Drugs in and of themselves are not good or evil, they do have risks however. which brings me to my next point. I never attributed the quote to the peanut farmer, but whoever said it was absolutely correct, "the punishment should not be worse than the drug", not to mention the war on drugs has created billionaire criminals the same way as Prohibition created millionaire criminals. We could take a small fraction on what we spend on interdiction efforts, spend it on treating those who develop addictions, or other problems with drug use and be many billions of dollars ahead of the game.

Oh well, back to my drug of choice, my glass is empty and needs refilling, I am happy my "drug of choice" is perfectly legal.

I decided that you can only say you are experimenting so many times, before you should just say the truth.  I AM SELF MEDICATING or ESCAPING because I have dealt with crazy people in my life.  ;)

I accept your stance on recreational drugs to those that can use them, each person should live as they choose.  But rather than funding the police use almost all the money to educate and rehabilitate.  And a portion to close up the southern border.  Watch drug use decline.  :)

Let adults do all the drugs they can afford.

We could decriminalize/legalize all drugs along with letting people use them. I don't know who will supplement the cost for the substance/s.

wish to take away freedoms from those struggling with a disease that wants to kill them.  Do we have compassion on those suffering addicts that want recovery?  I can think of better ways to spend our tax dollars on helping people, rather than hurting them further.

And recreational drugs should be optional to those that can use with no consequences, as none of our business or the governments.

No I have no compassion for addicts that chose to get high.

Do addicts have compassion for myself, or others? NO!

... see how fair that is?
