How can I go about getting references if nobody will see me without them?

How did you get your first job?  Research is the key, and you're in the right place.  You can do it yourself, or I'll do it, and you can pay for me to see someone that will give you the reference.  Your call.

Date Check or Room Service 2000.  These are independent verification services.

I joined Date-Check and received references there from 5 ladies thinking it would eliminate the hassles of continually bothering ladies for references.
Every lady I have seen since (save one) has still requested e-mail addresses for references.  2 who were listed with Date-Check didn't even bother to look at my profile. (sigh)

you provide them with enough information to properly screen you... you have to ask, and explain that you are NEW...
Or, join verification service as suggested by Sinful.

Room Service 2000 (RS2K) worked wonders for me.  I've seen five providers so far, and every one of them accepted an RS2K verification.  The downside is that it's limited mainly to the Midwest, but that's exactly where I live.

I looked around for well rated independents, was smooth and polite, explaining I was new to this, on the phone a time or two before making an appointment to build rapport. One asked me for a DL, the other not, the ID requester said I looked like a cop, I laughed her off with the response that yes I do, I'm a military guy, but would they send someone who did if it was a trap? It worked.

Some skill and some luck, I think.

I have a feeling that my Noonish meeting times helped, both of the providers made statements to the effect that Freaks and LEOs come out at night. How true that is?

I think the next time I see one of those or another, I'll trade a well earned review here, if so, for her reference.
