35 year police veteran Dan Page – who gently pushed CNN Reporter Don Lemon last week as he tried to move the crowd off the street – has been relieved of duty not bc of anything he did but bc of bombastic statements he made at an Oathkeepers speech.
Yes, one could infer from the speech that he is an idiot, a birther, a misogynist, and homophobe but he has a right to have these views as a private citizen. No, he did not make any racist remarks as far as I can tell. He said he is against affirmative action but so am I. His law enforcement career is basically over now.
But, at least as far we know now, his conduct as a police officer has been exemplary. I had no problem with him pushing a news reporter who was standing the street when the police were engaged. The guy who should have been relieved of duty is the officer who pointed his assault rifle at the crowd and screamed “I’ll fucking kill you.” Not Mr. Page who seemed to be entirely under control when we saw him on CNN. Crowd control of a mob is not a tea party. The cops have to engage in some degree of rough and tumble to do their job.
Is the media fueled Ferguson pendulum swinging too far against the police? Are the police officials backing down in the face of the relentless the “police are killing us” media barrage? Are we really going to fire police officers because their personal views are not politically correct
Won't this officer have a very good 1st amendment case to make in a lawsuit? A private employer doesn't have that hurdle to clear but I don't believe a police dept. can fire him legally over personal comments made off the job. There is a distinction made between the two types of employers, is there not?
Also, has the employer stated that the reason for the firing was based on the video and not the push of Lemon or are you saying they used the push as a scapegoat for the firing?
Bc his speech was not a matter of public concern [as far as I know-you have to listen to the entire speech] - and arguably impeded the police department’s ability to efficiently provide services. As a general rule, even public employees have no First Amendment protection, unless their speech is a matter of public concern.
If this guy had said – “Officer Wilson is lying about being attacked by Mike Brown”- for example, he could not be fired for this statement bc it is a matter of public concern. But I don’t think this rant will qualify, particularly since he apparently made some reference to killing everybody.
But I’m angry at the media for making a page one story about this guy when really all he did was properly guide the reporter off the street, and at the police department for folding under media pressure and canning a 35 year vet.
Last thing I heard was the police claimed it was the speech for which he was fired. But the question of pretext always has to be explored

I'm not doubting that there are some bad apples and some racial things going on that really shouldn't but I find it hard to believe that the whole force is corrupt. There are some good officers and if it weren't for the police in many cities crime would easily double.
Not bad idea really. We need to reconstitute and re-educate the police force and change them to Public Service instead being the Public Shooters, Hate Mongers and White Supremacist, they are today.
