In Iran, there are many Arab-Iranians and many Persian-Iranians. (Persians are not Arabs.) Also, there are Persian families who left Iran a long time ago so they are not even Iranian anymore, but they are still ancestrally Persian, hence Persian-American or Persian-French or whatever

In this political climate, there are probably other reasons to identify as Persian rather than Iranian. You CltLuvr alias made a joke about Aztec - Mexican which was pretty good.
People do similar things about where they live to make an impression: Park Slope vs Brooklyn or Upper West Side vs New York
