First thing: check out TER's "White List" feature.
Now then, some guys are smooth on the phone and can start a new friendship without giving out personal info. It's a very YMMV business.
But for most, one must give first to get second.
Go to Room Service 2000 (RS2K) and check the ladies for your city who, by being there, understand that very simple concept.
Join RS2K. Sorry, but early in the game you'll have to give up some personal info (name, employer). They check criminal history (I think), as well as verify employment. Priors are okay, just as long as they aren't violence-related or show a strong repeat-offender situation. Next, start a buddy system, where, assuming that you were a good client, the RS2K-listed will say nice things about you. Prospective new ladies will see this info and be influenced, to whatever degree, accordingly.
Start with an agency, then jump to indies as your interests warrant. By the time you reach #3, and assuming you play your cards right and build good relationships along the way (both on the board with the general community as well as specific ladies), you'll be coasting along just fine, and won't have to give out your personal info nearly as often.
I also recommend being in a situation where you don't give out your TER name when making new friendships (atleast not with the ladies who don't participate on the board). This could become its own troublesome kettle of fish.
Most hobbyists prefer anonymity. I understand. I personally got my start in the biz with the "smooth talker" route (yes, I had to temporarily lose my pencil pouch and lab coat and dime-store cologne, and I resisted heavily before investing in a pair of loafers, dark socks, and a Barry White speech coach tape). But that was several years ago, and in some cities that just doesn't happen often enough anymore.

look for girls that allow same day appointments and first contact over the phone. they are less likely to require references.

make any appointments with a lady that did not require references, period.
First you have to find a lady willing to see you by checking other info. you can give to satisfy her you are cool. Then you can use her as a reference, or do as already mentioned and join a service like Date Check or Preferred 411 who will check out your personal info.
