Why do you think R's are not putting detailed HC legislation out for public debate? Because the other side will pick it to death.

For the better of the R's chances in November, it's best to just trash O-care every chance they get.

For D's, its not pissing off their base anymore than Obama has to.

To better illustrate this, honest, reasonable people know Paul Ryan's budget, or something more draconian, will be needed to save Soc. Sec. and Medicare.

But does it help R's chances in the fall to have Libs rip it for not caring about the poor? Of course not.

I am thoroughly convinced no one will do anything about our big problems until they collapse under their own weight and the safety nets are in tatters and destroyed

I agree totally that things will most likely need to get much worse before real and lasting solutions are considered, at least given the present make up of Congress.

Even in the near to medium-term future, a Republican win in 2014 won’t begin moving things in the correct direction. There will be a slowdown in the present direction though. Even if the Republicans win again in 2016 it probably won’t be a super majority although they could widen the reduction in the filibuster gap that Reid started.

Certainly there is a political calculus and risk in the Republican’s lack of vocalization both informally and in formal House bills regarding health care reform. I wish they would put their ideas out there more in the form of House bills passed but they know they wouldn't go anywhere in Reid’s Senate. I think it would be a useful method that would get the media, to some degree, to demonstrate Reid’s blockage.

Right now the media can call the Republicans, “The House of No” when in reality Reid has blocked far more things than the House. In partial response to SP’s disingenuous statement regarding Republicans “wanting”  43 million without healthcare. . . .  look at all the Republican amendments to Obamacare that Reid killed.  Then again, the entire Obamacare playing field is a dishonest one. Obama’s multiple and intentional lies along the way are mere stepping stones to the planned single payer socialized medical system

Whether it's jobs, social security, Medicare, deficit/debt reduction, etc etc etc.

We needed a quarteback. We got a punter.

Punters are smarter than quarterbacks if the Wonderlic test is any measurement. I'd rather Obama take a knee with each snap.

well even Obama said it would be approved if it could be shown to neutral or better on GHG emissions.....no mention of leaking....and modern pipelines can be designed and operated very safely, including if deemed necessary, a "pipe within a pipe".

That is the local issue, but the national issue is the GHG question - again Obama said if GHG was neutral he would approve - no mention of leaks...of course why should any of us believe anything he says....after the numerous "ramifications" statements, the full investigation of XYZ scandal statements, the "line in the sand" statement, etc?

Certainly it is an issue but not the issue or reason for denial. There's already thousands of miles of pipeline in use. Some people seem to react as if this will be the first oil pipeline ever constructed. The "Keystone" oil is still moving. Which is less reliable, a pipeline with an occasional spill or a railroad tanker disaster with resulting fire destroying most of a town?

The fact is that there is about 57,000 miles of crude oil pipe lines in the US. Yes of course there will be a leak here and there. But we need the oil. Talk all you want but other forms of energy are a long way off, and besides there are many, many thousands of other things that come from crude.

For transport within the US, at this point, pipelines are the most efficient, cost effective and safest way to get crude and other products, in bulk, from point A to point B
