Racism is an ugly and evil thing. No doubt. But that doesn't mean Hank is right either. I mean to suggest that things are not drastically different today than it was in 1974 is ridiculous.

There have been tremendous strides in 4 decades. I know several liberal, African-Americans who would strongly disagree with Hank here.

Sure, they would proly all say we still have some distance to go to be "post-racial", if that is ever really possible, but it doesn't mean it shouldn't be a goal.

But lets not kid each other. Racism doesn't know any political party affiliation. Yes, it exists in the Republican party and yes Dems, it exists in your party too.

White, middle aged union workers in the North East are some of the biggest racists I have ever met. Italians in NYC, mostly Dems, can be vicious with the "moolyan" (sp?) comments.

It was Al Gore's father and Senator Byrd from WV who filibustered the Civil Rights Act. And we all know what Byrd did with his "hood" for decades. He wasn't some dopey kid who just got caught up in the KKK. He was a full grown man and was one of their leaders.

Joe Biden referred to Obama as "clean and articulate." Is that racist? Well if a Republican had said it....enough said.

Harry Reid said Obama was  "light skinned with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." How much "tolerance" would the left have if Republican Mitch McConnell said the exact same thing?

When that asshat Republican interrupted Obama during a speech in from of a joint session of congress and called him a liar, he was instantly labeled a racist by many on the Left. It made him an idiot, not a racist.

And yes of course there are racists in the Republican party. There are people in it, so there will be racists. And I know I won't convince one dyed in the wool lib that the Tea Party isn't racist, but some African-Americans are heroes to them. Colonel West from Florida is one. Dr. Ben Carson is another. Tea partiers would vote for those two almost unanimously not over only just Hilary Clinton, but Chris Christie as well.

I oppose Obama for I think his policies are killing the country. I think he is not serious about solving gigantic problems we face, he breeds resentment on a day in and day out basis and his Keynesian economics have failed the county. Many of you would say you disliked Bush b/c of his policies, and that's why I abhor Obama's.

And think about this. If a Republican, lets say John McCain, had a 20 year relationship with a man McCain referred to as the "most influential male in his adult life" and that man turned out to be a racist, anti-Semitic, anti-black clergy member, would you give John McCain a pass and assume HE wasn't a racist?

Again, it was horrible what Hank had to endure. He doesn't deserve to get racist letters in 1974 or 2014. He said things in the FOX piece I strongly disagree but he has different life experiences than I. But there is no need to bring his skin color into it. Ever.

Short of calling someone a killer or rapist, calling someone a racist is one of the worst things you can call someone. It shouldn't be thrown around lightly. It shouldn't be used to cast a net over an entire ideology or party for the idiocy of 1% of the groups members. It also immediately shuts down debate and dialogue.

Lets be honest here. We all know racists. And we all know they know no party.

an autographed baseball from Hank Aaron that was my grandfathers.

I believe you to be a black man.. I may be wrong.  But can you tell me that maybe the problem is that some just don't realize they are free?

I saw a moving music video that portrayed a vet not stepping on the plane until 40 years after a drafted war.  Do you believe that maybe some black Americans just haven't stepped off the plane yet?

And even more importantly, do you believe me to be a racist because I don't believe in Obama's change

Your record keeps skipping puppy.

When Bush was in office Democrats said it was patriotic to criticize a president. If you do it now you're racist. But Aaron grew up during segregation, then was the recipient of death threats as he broke the record. He's wrong about Obama and those who oppose him but I understand why he'd be bitter.

I honestly don't know because they omitted the letters, except for one that called him a scum bag, not a racial slur.

Everyone in public gets lots of hate mail.  There are many nuts.  The question is what percent of the people agree with the letter writers and what percent would not approve.  Again a fact that is not hinted at.

If it is .1% of the people who would side with the letter writers, I am not concerned. It is close to statistical zero.  In a country of 300,000,000, there are bound to be nuts, but I am not bothered by the extreme minority.

If it is 5% I am not worried since 10% believe Elvis is alive.

All I know from my personal experience, including everyone I know and every convesaration that I have overheard at the gym, in coffee shops, on the bus or subway, or any place else. real racial vitriol is insignificant.

On a related matter, as a Jew (lapse) I am totally unconcered with the Nazi scum that killed those people.  He is such a statistical zero he doesn't mean anything to me.  (I am concerned about crazies in general, but not anti-Semetic ones.)  Again, in 55 years that I am aware of, I have heard, experienced, or overheard so little anti-Semitism that it is a non-issue to me

There are two areas of L.A. that I frequent where beanies are very common.  Near the Farmer's Market and near Studio City. I know many people from the areas who wear beanies.   They all agree with me.

I am not saying nuts don't exist, but compare the level of security and any temple in the U.S. versus France, Sweden, or Italy and you see how free people feel.  The fact that you need a passport and a reseervation to visit the temple in Buenos Aires because of security says it all.

And yes, I will repeat it. I know it exists, but I have seen so little in my life

Race has been used to define who we are for thousands of yrs and won't change anytime soon. Tolerance has increased but every racial group has racists within them. Bad people will do bad things, it doesn't condem every member of the same race.
I voted for Obama but am critical of some of his changes, sometimes pretty vocally. Am I racist?

Young people are post racial but not the old bigots who believe everything is their birthright.

and turn against the authorities. Why not?

People tend to side with things they are fimilar with, race, location, favorite sports teams so many different things polarize us. Race is just one, but it's visual and you can see it. Babies and small children aren't racist but know when someone is different. Male / female , gay straight is the same thing, it doesn't mean you are racist because you know there is a difference, but by the same caveat people will always tend to side with things fimilar to them all other contingencies being the same.
I was in Iraq for 2 yrs and can tell you 90% of people coming into a situation are going to side with the person dressed like them, who looks like them and talks like them if they have no other information to base their decision on. Does it make them racist? No. Biased maybe but it's natural and something no amount of schooling or enlightenment will fix.
