I am not sure of the practicality, but it would be nice if the board would let you know that you have mail, no matter where you are on the site. Going back to the Home page all the time is a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance.

The only problem is, each time it checks takes up processor power on our servers. If I put it in reviews, the server would have to check about 200 times per second (really!)

How about if it just checked when you went to a new page? Should only take a simple instruction at the top of the page for it to check the database.
I keep my regular email open and that's how I get alerted.
Lately no body has PM'ed me though. Probably because I've been lurking.
