With the 80s being my "formative" years even growing up out east I can remember the buzz about the Minneapolis Sound........

...they could essentially have been considered Prince's back up band and several of them collaborated closely with him in his studio work and touring.

There was a very popular Twin Cities band called Chameleon that I always enjoyed seeing. They were mainly a cover band but they were excellent and put on over the top shows and achieved good regional success. Their drummer had a mechanical platform that would rise and invert the drum kit so that the drummer would play upside down. This over the top showmanship inspired and was adopted by Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. More importantly, one of the members of Chameleon was a man who moved to Minnesota from Greece to attend the UofM. His name is Yiannis Chryssomallis. His stage name is Yanni and he was the keyboard player. After Chameleon, Yanni went on to popularize New Age music and his name is now synonymous with New Age music. His work is renowned and loved world wide. Anyone who's spent much time with a masseuse or in an elevator has heard his music, if not seen his memorable performances performed live at some of the world's most iconic venues. Can we say that New Age music is also the Minneapolis Sound?

Did you not know that Prince played all of the instruments on their recordings?

...albums, other musicians were used. For example, Morris Day played drums on the song 'Party Up' on the 'Dirty Mind' album

One of my favorite band, so much raw energy and angst.......  I remember in high school that these guys were so cool that they made "anti-videos"  most of their early videos were them just sitting around.

One of my all time favorite punk bands! I lived in Minneapolis for a while a few years back and was always so jealous of my friends who grew up seeing The Replacements at punk houses and dive bars. I live vicariously through your memories ;)

I thought these guys were great, and I remember thinking that it would cool it would be to get away from New England and move to Minneapolis.  I think I even contemplated transferring from BC to go to the U.  Little did I know 25+ years later I would end up moving to the Cities.

Already mentioned, but a great band none the less.......

A little less known, but also a great band from the Cities......

There was a guy named tom seacrest who recorded under the name t.c.crest. He played with a band called gary and the nightcaps.

I know we have all been at last call when their classic Closing Times comes on, but here is another classic of theirs......

But if I bring anything up it's too controversial.  Kinda like the Purple One.  Pat a Vet on the back and you feel good and then trash the real informational freedom fighters on this board.  It's MN Nice in it's grandest form.  Board hags and board heads...should we just shudder up the shop now?

You're probably taking board life too seriously.  The best we can do is bring attention to whatever it is we want to bring attention to.  Getting emotionally invested in the campaign doesn't usually accomplish much beyond making us feel worse.

I've been on various forums for the past 20 years or so.  Many is the time I wish I had a remote kill button. But in retrospect it was a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing, to quote the Bard.

Maybe you've taken a few things a bit too seriously lately yourself, friend.  Perhaps???

Things could quickly get back to normal if a few old heads like you forgot I existed, let me be, and stopped letting everything make your bunghole pucker.  Yep, I said bunghole.  Push that report button now....I would be shocked if someone didn't.

Since I've been told in explicit detail to keep my mouth shut, I'll leave it at that but as always, I am able to accept PM's.  We are both racing toward heart attacks, let's see who the ultimate winner is!!

I'm sure you can find something more to your interest.  Besides, being from Minnesota, Prince is going to be of much more interest here than in other places around the country.

anyone on this site hasn't heard or at least heard of "Pussy Control", ...it's too bad.

A record label (i.e., Numero Group) that specializes in reissues and deep obscurities published a compact disc set with a hardcover book in late 2013 documenting the Minneapolis Sound from 1974 to 1984.

Hands down. Over 50 years in the business. Member of Minnesota Music Hall of Fame.

Or going way back to that same era, Chameleon!  Paul Metsa is from MN too.

I might be wrong but I thought they were from MN.....what can I say....I like a little twang!
