As Summer into Autumn slips
And yet we sooner say
"The Summer" than "the Autumn," lest
We turn the sun away,

And almost count it an Affront
The presence to concede
Of one however lovely, not
The one that we have loved --

So we evade the charge of Years
On one attempting shy
The Circumvention of the Shaft
Of Life's Declivity.

~Emily Dickinson

I awoke quite early this morning, my mind rather preoccupied and I felt the cool chill of the early morning air. I made myself a tea, bundled myself under a sweater that had been packed away for the summer and sat outside on the deck to sit and wait for the sun to rise. It was during this time that I realised the sun just wasn't coming, the warm summer air that I had become accustomed to seemed to be passing me by today and somehow summer just like most of this year had slipped away almost unnoticed.

I rather enjoyed those early morning hours despite it's strange quiet. It certainly wasn't quite autumn, the vivid fall colours I so enjoy have not yet arrived but the warm summer sun that used to greet me each morning with my tea has definitely come to pass. I enjoy the changing of the seasons; watching the trees prepare for a long winter, watching the squirrels hide and rehide their little finds in very specific little spots and watching the people and seeing how our patterns change as we bundle up and begin to ready ourselves for the coming snow. I enjoy the idea of getting cozy at night, snuggling under a blanket, drinking a nice red wine and holding somebody close for warmth. I enjoy the idea of waking up with the cool crisp air surrounding me, the breeze making me want to linger a little longer under the duvet, pressed up against that same somebody, bodies intertwined and comfortable. Done with the hot repressive summer heat and replaced with the cool touch of fall where you feel that the caress of another person keeps you warm, alive and warms you from the inside out.
